George Clooney Turned Down an Airline Commercial Worth $35 Million
In a 2021 interview with The Guardian, George Clooney recalled being offered an opportunity to work for just one day for an airline commercial but decided to turn it down as it was not worth it. When he was asked whether he ever thought that he has “enough money now” in his life, he shared,
“Well, yeah. I was offered $35m for one day’s work for an airline commercial, but I talked to Amal [Clooney, the human rights lawyer he married in 2014] about it and we decided it’s not worth it.”
As to why he left a hefty commercial, he mentioned,
“It was [associated with] a country that, although it’s an ally, is questionable at times, and so I thought: ‘Well, if it takes a minute’s sleep away from me, it’s not worth it.’”
It was clear that he made a wise decision to turn down the work instead of engaging in an activity that could become a risk at some point in his impressive career. But many might be surprised to know that his career might not have an easy start that one would imagine.
George Clooney Had His Fair Share of Struggle Before Rising to Fame
The 62-year-old actor once revealed working odd jobs to make ends meet before finding his way to Hollywood. Earlier in his career, he used to cut tobacco or sell insurance before becoming the icon we know today.
In an interview with The Telegraph, The Flash star mentioned,
“I cut tobacco for a living in Kentucky. That was hard work.”
He further compared acting with the insurance work he did at the time,
“I sold insurance door-to-door. That’s hard work. Acting is not hard work. If you’re lucky enough to be sitting at a table like this, you’ve been very lucky in your life.”
He also mentioned that actors should not complain about their profession, which he felt was challenging in his case.
“I remember I would hear of famous stars complaining in Hollywood about how hard their life was – I didn’t want to hear that. He added, “So I don’t find it difficult. I find it challenging, and sometimes I’m very bad at it, but I don’t find it hard.”
Despite initial struggles, he eventually got his breakthrough with his role as Dr. Doug Ross in the 1994 medical drama series ER. From there on, he shifted his focus to the big screen which showcased his versatility, thus establishing him among the influential personalities of his generation.
