Jada Pinkett Smith Stopped Filming After Her Co-star’s Gut Wrenching Confession

During the production of the 1998 film Woo, a surprising emotional moment occurred when Tommy Davidson, one of the actors, managed to contact his birth mother by phone. And thus upon learning this news, Jada Pinkett Smith, his co-star, immediately halted the filming for the day.

She then encouraged Davidson to take the time he needed to handle this situation and further encouraged him to meet with his mother.

Why Did Jada Pinkett Smith Halt Filming Woo for This?

Tommy Davidson was going through a pretty tough time while filming the 1998 project, a situation that was observed by his close friend and co-star, Jada Pinkett Smith. Sensing his unease, she chose to confront the actor.

After gently probing Davidson, he eventually revealed the reasons behind his distress. The reason was that he had just spoken to his birth mother for the first time. Without hesitation, Pinkett Smith called for the set to wrap up, demonstrating her immense kindness and support for her co-star during his difficult time.

In the 2019, Red Table Talk, Davidson stated,

“[The] first time that we worked together — and I really got to know you on the set of Woo — I came out for a scene and you looked at me and you said, ‘Something’s wrong with you,’–I was like, ‘What you talking about? Let’s just get to work.’”

He then further continued saying,

“I said, ‘My mother contacted my real mother and she was on the phone. I got a chance to talk to her but I don’t want to deal with that,’–She said, ‘Oh really? OK, hold — that’s a wrap!’”

By giving the actor the necessary time to process this significant life event, Pinkett Smith played a very crucial role in helping him reconnect with his birth mother. The bond between the mother-son duo still remains strong, while Pinkett Smith and Davidson also continue to be best of friends.

The evident bond between Jada Pinkett Smith and Tommy Davidson definitely showcased their strong friendship. Thus, while working on the 1998 rom-com, dissatisfied with the original ending, they spontaneously included an impromptu kissing scene to tie up the whole story in the end.

However, Davidson, somewhat unaware of the on-set intimacy scene rules, surprised Smith with an unexpected kiss, leaving her visibly taken aback and causing her to flinch. And thus, the trouble began.

The actor writes in his memoir Living in Color,

“I didn’t know this: You have to rehearse a kiss,–You can’t just spring it on your costar … And I didn’t think it was all that big of a deal.–Will went all gangsta on me, saying what I did was not cool. There was a moment there when we might have come to blows. My reactive fight-or-flight instinct was triggered and I could have exploded.”

Despite Davidson’s actions leading to a heated argument, he remains close to the Smith family even to this day.

Woo is currently available on Apple TV for rent.
