Original Daredevil Showrunner Abandoned the Show for Sony’s Sinister Six Movie With Andrew Garfield That Never Happened

Before Sony’s plans of building a cinematic universe ran to the ground following the underwhelming reception to TASM2, they initially had a Sinister Six movie in development. Drew Goddard, known for his work in Ridley Scott’s The Maritan and The Cabin in the Woods, was initially appointed to lead the project, which would’ve advanced the Andrew Garfield-led universe.

And even though the filmmaker was enthralled by the opportunity that led him to part ways with Netflix’s acclaimed Daredevil, unfortunately, the movie never saw the end of the tunnel.

Drew Goddard Had No Problem Leaving Daredevil for the Canceled Sinister Six

Four months after Drew Goddard was appointed the showrunner for Netflix’s Daredevil, which set the benchmark for other superheroes in the realm of TV, he parted ways with the production. The filmmaker, who wrote the first two episodes of the show, had no second thoughts about leaving the acclaimed series after getting the offer to helm the Sinister Six project. Per MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios,

“Goddard eagerly accepted what promised to be his highest-profile job ever. He believed he had discharged his obligations to Daredevil with his two scripts.”

While Daredevil went on to become a huge success even without the presence of Goddard, unfortunately, the Cloverfield screenwriter’s Sinister Six never saw the end of the day.

Andrew Garfield Hopes Sinister Six Will Get Eventually Running

Andrew Garfield, who was in talks for starring in the canceled Sinister Six movie, went on to express his fascination with the idea while commending Drew Goddard as a filmmaker. And while the meetings didn’t last long, as Sony went on to handle the keys of Spider-Man to MCU, which revamped the webhead, Andrew Garfield hopes the movie eventually gets made. Garfield told Collider:

“I don’t know how close it got [to getting made], but I definitely had a few meetings, and it was really exciting. I’ve got to say, because I love Drew so much, and I love Cabin in the Woods, and the other stuff that he’s made. We just got on like a house on fire. I loved his vision, he’s so unique and odd and off-kilter, and unconventional in his creative choices. So that was definitely a fun couple of months, but life… It would have been cool. Maybe one day he’ll get to do it, but it would’ve been cool.

Although Sony has tried and failed to get the Sinister Six running on several occasions, with the studio focused on building their universe around villains, fans will hope they eventually get it going.
