Sylvester Stallone has starred in several iconic roles throughout his Hollywood career. Portraying the roles of John Rambo and Rocky Balboa in the early 1980s, Stallone made a fortune for himself and earned worldwide recognition for the roles.

Talking about a missed golden opportunity, Sylvester Stallone talked about how he regretted not choosing to work on Rambo IV. Rejected a ton of money, Stallone realized his mistake years later when he revealed that Rambo IV could have earned at the global box office.

Sylvester Stallone Rejected A Lot of Money For Rambo IV

Back in 1988, Stallone was working on Rambo III. Wanting to save his former superior Colonel Samuel Trautman from Afghanistan, Sylvester Stallone goes on a killing rampage. Hoping that the movie will earn big at the box office, the idea of Rambo IV was already thought of as far back as 1988.

In his interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Stallone got candid about how his career turned out. When asked the question “What’s the most you were ever paid for a role?” Stallone replied that he turned down a whopping sum of $34 million for Rambo IV and that also back in the 1980s!

“I turned down 34. We were doing Rambo III. We thought it was going to be the biggest hit — this was before it came out. And I was paid a fortune for it. Then they go, “We want Rambo IV. Here it is: Pay or play, 34.” I go, “Let’s not jump the gun here …”

With inflation added and calculated in present times, Sylvester Stallone rejected an amount of $85 million for a single role in Rambo IV!

“For real. That’s not a joke. Oh boy, what an idiot. Now I think about that and … wow.”

The idea for Rambo IV in the 1980s and the 90s was quickly killed since Stallone did not want to return for the role. Over the years, however, the actor decided to reprise his role in the early 2000s and finally, Rambo was released in 2008. The actor further proved why he was indeed worth the money since Stallone’s four-minute monologue at the end of Rambo was one of the most iconic lines ever spoken!

At the end of the original Rambo, Sylvester Stallone’s character was going to kill himself. Thinking that the ending was too bleak, Stallone decided to change the ending and instead add a four-minute monologue about his PTSD from the war.

“That scene was a tough one to get past the producers. They didn’t want it. I was supposed to be shot and die. And I go, “There are a lot of veterans who are going to look at this and go, ‘So my only hope is to kill myself?’” I can’t do that.”

He further continued,

“I did 20 interviews with veterans and I compiled it into that moment, all stream of consciousness, with everything just pouring out. I want people to take away some sense of hope when they leave the theater. I don’t want my heroes to die.”

And that is why, Sylvester Stallone indeed deserved the high fees for his role as Rambo. The actor reprised his role in Rambo back in 2008 with the last film released in 2019 Rambo: Last Blood. The Rambo films are available to rent on Apple TV+ in the U.S.
