“Bigger redemption than Vegeta”: Hiro Mashima Was the Real God of Character Development After Redeeming the Most Hated Fairy Tail Character

Hiro Mashima’s Fairy Tail is fairly popular among shonen fans and enjoys a dedicated fanbase. However, compared to other mainstream shonen series, Fairy Tail has some noticeably weaker aspects that weigh it down. For instance, Mashima’s focus on the power of friendship saves the day, no matter how dire the situation is.

It has become a popular notion that the “power of friendship” is one of the worst aspects of the series. While there’s some truth to this statement, the bond between the characters keeps many fans hooked to the narrative. The mangaka has created great characters and their interactions with each other make Fairy Tail a heartwarming delight.

The character who embodies the best aspects of the series is Gajeel Redfox, as his phenomenal character development would have been incomplete without the power of friendship. Mashima’s masterful execution of Gajeel’s developmental arc is still fascinating to fans after all these years.

Hiro Mashima delivered a redemption arc like no other

Gajeel Redfox was introduced as a ruthless villain, who made one of the worst first impressions on fans. He attacked Natsu’s guild and inflicted severe damage on the Shadow Gear, which consisted of three members Levy, Jet, and Droy. He was brutal with all three of them and didn’t show any mercy while beating them. However, after his fight with Natsu and Makarov’s invitation for him to join the guild, he slowly began to redeem himself.

The Fairy Tail guild was initially skeptical of him, and he kept to himself as much as he could. But as the story progressed, he showed up for his comrades and proved his sincerity to them. One of the first people to give him a chance was Levy. Instead of accepting him right away, she observed him and the efforts he was putting in.

He let Jet and Droy beat him up and saved Levy from Laxus by taking full damage from his attacks. Hiro Mashima gave fans and the characters time to warm up to Gajeel, and that worked extremely well. Some fans find it hard to believe how Gajeel started out, and his relationship with Levy is extremely heartwarming as both of them have come a long way. This Instagram post pointed out how fascinating Gajeel’s character arc was in the series, and fans were all praise in the comments.

He’s the biggest advocate for the “I can change him” movement 😂

Don’t crucify me, but this is the superior storyline of bulma and vegeta. Unlike Gajeel we didn’t see Vegeta slowly fall in love with bulma, and slowly have somebody love him back.

Gajeel is indeed the best man no question

The reaction to Gajeel and Levy’s relationship is understandable, as Levy acknowledged his efforts without letting him off the hook easily. She held him accountable while also giving him a chance. Interestingly, fans pointed out the similarities between Gajeel and Vegeta’s character arcs.

Ever since Gajeel’s introduction, fans noticed that he resembled Vegeta from Dragon Ball. From their similar appearances to their redemption arcs, both characters have a lot in common. Vegeta was able to experience a new way of living life after fighting with the Z fighters. Similarly, Gajeel became a new person after joining the Fairy Tail guild.

Although Gajeel’s relationship with Levy is better explained than Vegeta’s affection for Bulma. While there’s no doubt that Vegeta deeply cares for Bulma with how he got enraged for her, fans still wish that Vegeta and Bulma got a similar developmental arc as Gajeel and Levy.

Fairy Tail is available to stream on Crunchyroll.
