For some fans, the bold reinvention was an absolute masterpiece, while others felt like it tainted the franchise’s legacy. Adam Driver’s portrayal of Kylo Ren also received a lot of backlash and was one of the many talking points. But in recent years, the criticism by fans has gone out of hand!

All the debates about The Last Jedi have mainly occurred on social media, where fans keep revisiting the film and expressing their grievances. Few were also bitter about having to wait for nearly 3 decades to see Luke Skywalker as a Jedi master but being completely disappointed by the film.

Such comments echo the sentiments of fans who were dissatisfied with the film’s portrayal of Luke, claiming it undermined the character’s legacy. One fan also highlighted the below-average audience score of the film on rotten tomatoes. But a few jumped in and defended the film, putting forth the argument that people are allowed to have differing opinions.

Adam Driver’s Kylo Ren, often seen as a successor to Darth Vader, has also become a lightning rod for criticism. While Driver’s performance was widely praised, some fans believe the character fell short of living up to Vader’s iconic stature, labeling him all kinds of things from overdramatic to incoherent.

Amid all the backlash, many still believe that The Last Jedi is a beautiful film and it deserves to be appreciated. Rian Johnson, the visionary, was unapologetic when it came to introducing new themes of legacy, failure, and self-discovery.

Luke Skywalker’s arc, which is often demeaned by the haters, is much appreciated and celebrated for its depth by people who wholeheartedly support the trilogy. Mark Hamill did justice to the ‘fallen hero finding redemption’ narrative and was as amazing as Luke Skywalker. He effortlessly showcased the pressure that one feels due to the weight of living up to something larger than themselves, in his case, it was a mythic legacy.

The throne-room battle, Vice Admiral Holdo’s sacrifice, and more such moments are highlights of The Last Jedi. The storytelling is quite daring and Adam Driver’s performance suits the themes of the enduring saga, even if some might not agree. The movie undeniably pushes the boundaries of what a Star Wars film could be, and it still ignites discourse amongst passionate fans, thus keeping the franchise alive in the public consciousness.
