Years Before Superman, David Corenswet Didn’t Like Kevin Spacey’s Villian When He Showed Up in a Flashback of House of Cards

Henry Cavill’s Superman replacement, David Corenswet, has appeared in quite a few interesting roles before his DCU entry. One of these roles was in the Netflix political drama, House of Cards, which starred Kevin Spacey. By the time Corenswet made his only appearance in the penultimate episode, Spacey was fired from the show after his legal troubles.

Corenswet’s character in the series was not fond of Spacey’s character at all. The same would’ve happened in DC if their characters were to meet. While Corenswet plays the Man of Steel in James Gunn’s Superman, Spacey played villain Lex Luthor in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns.

Before he put on the Superman suit, David Corenswet appeared in a bunch of movies like Pearl and Look Both Ways and TV shows like Lady in the Lake. Corenswet also played a small role in House of Cards in its final season led by Robin Wright. He played a past boyfriend of Wright’s Claire Underwood in a flashback scene.

Wright got to lead the series after her co-star Kevin Spacey was pushed out of the show due to the severe allegations of s*xual assault against him. A young Claire, played by Reacher actress Willa Fitzgerald, is seen having a conversation with Corenswet’s Reed in the penultimate episode of the show.

Reed is not at all a fanboy of Spacey’s Frank Underwood, whom he says keeps his mouth running all the time. Reed tries his best to pull Claire away from entering into a marriage with Frank, but she seems to have bigger plans. Eventually, she turns down Reed and marries Frank because she wants every door to be wide open.

Corenswet only had that brief appearance in House of Cards, but he played lead roles in Ryan Murphy’s Netflix shows, Hollywood and The Politician. He also starred in the HBO limited series, We Own This City, from the writers and executive producers of The Wire.

David Corenswet and Kevin Spacey would’ve been enemies in DC as well

David Corenswet is about to begin his superhero journey as Clark Kent/Superman in James Gunn’s Superman. He has already won over the audiences with his appearance in the trailer, which promises a fun and hopeful film. Nicholas Hoult will play the menacing villain Lex Luthor in this version of Superman.

Before Hoult’s DCU villain and Jesse Eisenberg’s DCEU villain, the role of Lex Luthor was played by Kevin Spacey. Spacey’s villain went up against Brandon Routh’s Superman in Bryan Singer’s Superman Returns. Spacey’s villain role was appreciated in the film, which had nothing going right for it otherwise.

If Corenswet and Spacey were to meet in some kind of The Flash-like multiversal collab, they would’ve hated each other more than Reed hated Frank in House of Cards.

House of Cards is now available for streaming on Netflix.
