“Yuji mentions… Bankai and Rasengan”: It’s Hard to Miss Gojo Copying Donnie Yen’s Fight Moves From IP Man in Jujutsu Kaisen

Jujutsu Kaisen might leave you with mixed feelings about the overall story that Gege Akutami told, but the one undeniably brilliant aspect was the action. The thrill of the fight and the smooth choreography kept us on our toes. In a world of sorcery, it relied on combat quite a lot.

One interesting fight involved the Strongest Sorcerer, Gojo Satoru, in close combat with Miguel Oduol. Formerly as a commander to Suguru Geto, he was loyal enough to go against the strongest to help his vision. That obviously didn’t end well for him but it landed him a different job.

What was curious about this fight wasn’t that Miguel fought Gojo on equal footing (almost) or that the strongest sorcerer went all out in a close combat situation. Gojo’s moves in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 perfectly mirrored a scene from a martial arts movie.

The almost 1:1 replica is fascinating, to say the least, and adds to Gojo’s character. Jujutsu Kaisen does canonically have characters who are hardcore nerds for movies and anime.

Is Gojo an Ip Man fan and uses his moves during fights?

During the hand-to-hand parts of Gojo and Miguel’s fight, the white-haired sorcerer uses a combination of punches against his opponent that are swift and hit hard. Jujutsu Kaisen fans, however, realized these moves are directly from a scene in Ip Man.

The Ip Man series is a four-part franchise about the life of the Chinese martial arts grandmaster, Ip Man. He also taught the martial arts legend, Bruce Lee, everything he knew. Donnie Yen plays the titular role, with Sammo Hung as the fighting choreographer.

One specific scene in Ip Man was referenced in Jujutsu Kaisen 0 for Gojo and Miguel’s fight. This Reddit user brings it up and shows us a side-by-side comparison of the two scenes.

You think Goatjo does this because he watched Ip-man?

Let’s say, though, that Gojo watched Ip Man and learned this particular set of moves by watching Donnie Yen’s fight. It isn’t even ridiculous to think so, considering the sorcerer’s homework for his student, Yuji Itadori, was to watch movies.

This does make Gojo a canonical nerd for movies, including martial arts movies. It could imply he isn’t the strongest from formal training but by copying cheesy martial arts films. Jujutsu Kaisen has referenced other anime so the characters do engage with other media.

There’s no mention of Ip Man in the Jujutsu Kaisen universe but if the characters consume anime and manga material, it’s likely they watch other films and get inspired.

The goofiness of Jujutsu Kaisen

When Yuji Itadori was first introduced to the world of jujutsu sorcery, he completely expected it to be like Naruto, Dragon Ball, or Bleach. He was sorely disappointed to find out it was nothing like that, and it’s true, Jujutsu Kaisen never measured up to them.

It’s not unrealistic for a Japanese teenager to believe the world of sorcery and curses is like an anime. In a way, he isn’t wrong since he is in his own anime, and soon enough, future anime might reference Jujutsu Kaisen.

This silliness, however, adds depth to their characters. It shows that they aren’t just sorcerers who are ready to suffer and die but actual human beings who enjoy the same things we do.

Jujutsu Kaisen is available on Crunchyroll and Netflix.
