Nintendo Devs are Checking “More Than 10,000 Games” One by One to Protect a Critical Switch 2 Feature
After months of anticipation, fans finally got a closer look at Nintendo Switch 2 on April 2. A number of key details, such as 4k-capable Docked mode, improved resolution, and hardware, were confirmed by Nintendo. It’s fair to say that the expectations going into the hour-long direct were sky-high.
It’s quite clear that the Nintendo Switch is a massive upgrade over its predecessor. Nintendo has made its effort toward developing quality hardware and software when it comes to Switch 2.
The company wants this console to go down as one of the most successful ones in the industry and to ensure that Nintendo has manually checked more than 10,000 games to protect backward compatibility.
Why Nintendo checked over 10,000 games for Switch 2
For a console generation to last almost an entire decade is no joke. Thanks to incredible sales numbers, the original Switch has been Nintendo’s main offering since 2017. During this period, we’ve seen tons of major hits on the console, such as The Legend of Zelda and Super Mario.
So, when Switch 2 was announced, gamers were worried about whether they’d be able to play the games in their Switch libraries on the successor. However, it’s been confirmed by Nintendo that almost every single Switch game will be compatible and playable on the new console. While talking about the console’s backward compatibility, one of Nintendo’s developers revealed the extent to which they’ve fine-tuned the feature.
Oh yes… We’re checking them all, one by one. More than 10,000 games* in total.
It’s not just the fact that there’ll be backward compatibility for Switch games. Switch 2 is also planning to bring some improvements to various titles, including Breath of the Wild and Super Mario Party Jamboree. All of these will have specific Switch 2 upgrades, versions, and paid paths to switch over.
It’s great to see that Switch 2 isn’t a clean state. We all remember that time in the video gaming industry when the announcement of a new console generation meant purchasing new games for the new devices. However, those days are long gone for various companies, including Nintendo.
Some Switch games might have issues running on the successor
While Switch 2’s backward compatibility will allow you to play more than 10,000 games, it won’t all be a smooth ride. According to Nintendo, 188 Switch games have a number of issues running on Switch 2.
Out of these, 141 games, including the likes of Doom Eternal, Rocket League, Fortnite, NBA 2K25, and Warframe, deal with startup issues. However, Nintendo has stated that there’s a Switch 2 version of Fortnite coming in the near future.
There are also 47 games, such as Fall Guys, Alan Wake: Remastered, and Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection, that will be playable on Switch 2 but will have some compatibility issues.
It’s crucial to keep in mind that this is a tentative list. As Nintendo conducts more tests on the new console, we can see more games being optimized to work on Switch’s successor.
