“The Clover Kingdom is based on…”: Black Clover Fans Are Finally Figuring Out the Real World Countries That Inspired Yuki Tabata

Yuki Tabata has shared several things about Black Clover, its characters, and his inspirations behind it. But the author conveniently forgot to mention which real-life country serves as the primary inspiration for the series. I mean, is it based in England? Germany? Italy? Russia?
As a result, fans have been stuck in a perpetual dilemma. There are fans out there fighting for which country has the closest architecture and natural climate to the Spade, Clover, and other kingdoms. And all the while, the actual author has been silent. He still is. So let the war of speculation commence.
Black Clover fans are exhausting themselves trying to figure out which country the series is based on
Firstly, the general consensus is that Black Clover is based on Western European countries. Not a single country in particular, but an amalgamation of all or a few of them. Other fans have also chimed in that France, Germany, and Spain are also involved in the conception of the Clover Kingdom.
Of course, there is a huge debate on which country specifically the Spade Kingdom is based on. For example, some suggest Russia, while others suggest Germany. But one thing is for sure, Hino Kuni is based either on Japan or a similar Asian country. There is absolutely no disagreement regarding that. The author did state that the character Yami is inspired by his real-life mentor, while Charmy is inspired by his wife.

Some fans have even gone to the extent of painstakingly analyzing the names of the characters to figure out which language they are derived from. Unfortunately for them, Yuki Tabata himself admitted that he just looks up the keywords related to the characters in dictionaries of various languages. Then, once he finds a word he likes, he uses it accordingly.
Let’s trace what inspired Yuki Tabata
Yuki Tabata has stated on multiple occasions that he has been influenced by a plethora of manga. Their influences are pretty much visible in his works. The series that left the biggest impact on him are Berserk, Yu Yu Hakusho, Bleach, and Dragon Ball.

In a 2018 French article published by Le Point, it was revealed that the battles, environments and the story of Berserk were an important source of inspiration for the author. Once again, Berserk is also not inspired by a specific country but by medieval Europe. While Midland is compared to Denmark, the Tudor Empire could be based on the Holy Roman Empire.
But at the same time, Black Clover isn’t a Berserk copy, and the backgrounds and environments are not typical of Berserk. There are similarities as well as differences between the two works. At the end of the day, it is difficult to prove exactly which real-life country Black Clover is inspired by, especially when the author himself is unbothered by such details.
Black Clover manga is available to read on Viz Media, while the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
