Gareth Evans opens up about Havoc’s fair share of setbacks
Havoc’s journey from reel to screen was fraught with hurdles that came together to contribute to its extended delay. In conversation with Slash Film, director Gareth Evans recalled why the film had to wait for 4 years before being released. He noted:
Short answer? Scheduling issues, strikes, and then waiting to get everyone back in the room together so we could actually finish what was literally two weeks worth of pickups.
After finishing up all major filming in October 2021, Evans identified the need for additional pickups to enhance a few key sequences. However, bringing a star-studded cast, including Tom Hardy and Forest Whitaker, together in the same room proved to be a daunting task. Evans added:
It was just a perfect storm of all those things together, but what it gave me is this unusual luxury of being able to sit with the film, and get to the core of what was required from the pickups.
And, just as the cast managed to align schedules for reshooting, the 2023 SAG-AFTRA strike brought all of Hollywood to a standstill. The industry-wide labor union-led protest halted several ongoing productions, one of which was Havoc. The timing proved to be particularly unfortunate for the makers of the film, as it happened right when the cast and crew were ready to finish the reshoots.
While these delays might have been frustrating, they gave Evans an unexpected opportunity: time. With the movie in a state of limbo, he had the chance to meticulously review, scrutinize, and refine the footage. Evans described the opportunity as “an unusual luxury” that afforded him a chance to evaluate and experiment with the film. This prolonged post-production phase might’ve just given the film some of its best moments as it enabled a deeper exploration of its emotional base, enriching the narrative depth.
It didn’t take long for Havoc to triumph on Netflix
Despite the many hurdles along the way, Havoc emerged as a testament to creative commitment and determination. Since its debut on April 25, 2025, the film has managed to successfully rule hearts and streaming charts, having secured the #2 spot on Netflix’s Top 10 Movies in the USA (via FlixPatrol).
The film’s journey underlines the intricacies of filmmaking and the contingencies that can arise. Ultimately, the delays only resulted in giving us a more refined, polished final product that felt nothing short of a delightful reward.
