James Gunn Could Create DCU’s Most Hilarious Running Joke by Bringing a ‘Suicide Squad’ Star Back From the Dead

Jai Courtney is all game to return as Captain Boomerang in James Gunn’s DC Universe. The Australian actor has recently expressed his desire to reprise the Aussie boomerang-wielding thief, Boomerang. And honestly, Gunn can use this as a perfect opportunity to create the DCU’s most hilarious running joke.
Courtney first appeared as the notorious thief in 2016’s Suicide Squad, directed by David Ayer. The actor played a prominent role in the first film and, unlike many of his teammates, made it out alive alongside Deadshot and Harley Quinn. However, in James Gunn’s 2021 reboot, Boomerang’s luck ran out fast as he was killed off in the film’s explosive opening scene.
How Captain Boomerang met his gruesome end in James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad
Fans were left shocked and surprised when Jai Courtney‘s Captain Boomerang was killed off almost instantly at the start of 2021’s The Suicide Squad. As mentioned above, Boomerang dies in the film’s opening scene, immediately setting the film’s chaotic vibe from the very beginning.
In the movie, Courtney’s character is part of Task Force X, a team of incarcerated supervillains assembled by intelligence officer Amanda Waller. The squad is deployed to the nation of Corto Maltese, where they are ambushed by heavily armed enemy forces. Amid the chaos and fight, a helicopter crashes into the nearby jungle, causing trees to explode and sending sharp wooden debris flying through the air.
Several of these deadly shards impale Captain Boomerang, fatally wounding him before he’s engulfed in the flames from the wreckage. Just before his death, the Aussie thief is seen giving Harley Quinn his signature smirk, leaving many sad about his sudden exit.
Jai Courtney hopes to return as Captain Boomerang despite gory exit
Despite his character’s heartbreaking and instant exit from the film, Jai Courtney strongly wishes to suit up as Captain Boomerang in future DCU films. The actor, who is currently gearing up for his upcoming film Dangerous Animals, revealed details of his earlier discussion with director James Gunn during the filming of The Suicide Squad.
After reading the fate of Captain Boomerang through the film’s script, Jai Courtney told James Gunn that the character was ‘cool,’ expressing his doubts on the character’s death. Courtney told Variety:
I was like, “Come on, man. Boomerang is cool.” And James is like, “You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?” And I was like, “Hell yeah.” So I have hope. Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day.
What’s next for Jai Courtney beyond the DCU?
Post his stint in 2021’s The Suicide Squad, Jai Courtney has kept things slow when it comes to his career. The actor recently shifted to upstate New York with partner Dina Shihabi and their daughter. During his conversation with Variety, Courtney spoke about embracing bucolic life and said,
I was going through a few transitions in my personal life and needed a gear shift. So, we took a swing and just decided to go somewhere wildly different. I haven’t looked back. I’m kind of an impulsive person, and it just felt like a like a good excuse to turn over a new leaf and start a different chapter.
The former DC actor is now prepping for the release of his upcoming film, Dangerous Animals. The film, directed by Sean Byrne, is an Australian survival horror. The plot revolves around a surfer who must escape after being kidnapped by a serial killer who intends to feed her to sharks.
Alongside Jai Courtney, the film will feature actors Josh Heuston, Hassie Harrison, Rob Carlton, and many others. Dangerous Animals had its first screening at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival on May 17, 2025.
Dangerous Animals is scheduled to hit the theaters on June 6, 2025, in the USA.
