Star Trek Brings Back Captain Kirk From the Dead: William Shatner’s 1 Condition for Returning to the Franchise, Explained

William Shatner headlined Star Trek for years before other spinoff shows took the franchise to global heights. The actor was the face of the franchise, along with Leonard Nimoy’s Spock, and has since associated himself with several Star Trek properties, appearing at conventions and directing documentaries.

Shatner’s Captain Kirk was canonically killed off in Star Trek Generations, which saw some of the TOS cast crossover with the TNG cast. Shatner has since attempted to return as Kirk to the franchise, but none of the ideas have seemed to resonate with the actor. However, a comic book series is finally set to bring back Kirk from the dead.

William Shatner played Captain Kirk for three seasons of Star Trek: TOS, and then returned to play the part in the six original films with the same cast. Shatner has been synonymous with the part ever since, even though the role has been recast with actors like Chris Pine and Paul Wesley in different movies and shows.

Captain Kirk is canonically dead in the Star Trek franchise. In the movie Generations, he is shown to be stuck in a Nexus that is controlled by an energy ribbon, which the Enterprise-B tried to stop. Decades later, Captain Picard brings him out of the Nexus and seeks his help to stop the antagonist from blowing up a planet. In the resulting battle, Kirk loses his life.

There have been several attempts to bring Kirk back to the franchise, with many of the comics mostly setting their stories before he died in Generations. However, the latest comic book series Star Trek: The Last Starship will reportedly resurrect the captain. The comic will reportedly be set in the future when the Federation has been mostly destroyed.

A resurrected Kirk reportedly captains the last Starship to travel the cosmos to bring back the unity between various planets. Writer Collin Kelly told THR,

William Shatner’s iconic performance transcends borders, and Kirk is one of the great characters of the modern fiction canon…We’re honored to be taking this character into truly uncharted, groundbreaking territory in The Last Starship…as the Federation’s greatest pioneer must face down the inferno that threatens to consume his entire legacy.

William Shatner has been an irreplaceable part of the Star Trek franchise, and while there have been several attempts to figure out a way to make Captain Kirk return, with Shatner’s age, this seems to be the perfect way for a return.

Captain Kirk may have appeared on screens in the recent past (and will return in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3), but William Shatner has not played the role for a long time. Everything about Shatner’s Kirk has been about the past, and since the character’s canonical death, there have been no successful attempts to resurrect him.

Even J.J. Abrams’ Star Trek reboot brought back Leonard Nimoy as Spock Prime and not the one fans love. William Shatner reportedly had a hologram cameo in the movie, but it was ultimately dismissed at the scripting stage.

Shatner mentioned in a panel in February that there was finally a pitch for his return that he liked. He said (via The Direct),

If Kirk is going to come back, it has to mean something. It has to be the show. But I was so impressed by this writer, so I said, let’s talk after I’m done in Vancouver. So I’m awaiting a pitch to make it the show, it should come on Monday or Tuesday.

There have been no updates on this mystery project, and Shatner might just be too old for a return as Kirk. The upcoming comic book Star Trek: The Last Starship might be the only way to keep his legacy intact, though a spinoff with Paul Wesley’s Captain Kirk may also be another avenue.

Star Trek Generations is now available to stream on Paramount+.
