Matt Damon starred in Ethan and Joel Coen‘s Western, True Grit, in 2010, a film that has been deemed as one of the best to have come out of the genre in the 21st century.
True Grit follows the story of a teenager, Mattie Ross (Hailee Steinfeld), who is seeking revenge on outlaw Tom Chaney (Josh Brolin) for the murder of her father. She convinces Rooster Cogburn (Jeff Bridges) to assist her in the hunt, and the duo develops a special bond along the way. They are joined by Damon’s Texas Ranger LaBoeuf, who is also hunting Chaney.
Not only did the film single-handedly revive the Western genre, but it ended up with 10 nominations at the 83rd Academy Awards, including a Best Supporting Actress nomination for Steinfeld, despite True Grit being her theatrical-film debut.

Many Westerns have come and gone, so what sets the Coen Brothers’ True Grit apart from the rest? As an adaptation of Charles Portis’ namesake novel, the film did absolute justice to the source material, all while maintaining its unique identity.
As a result, not only was it an unforgettable addition to the genre, but also a tad better than the 1969 version that tried its hand at bringing Portis’ story to life.
Fans’ Ruling: Matt Damon’s True Grit Is Better Than the Original
In 1969, Henry Hathaway’s True Grit was released, starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell, Kim Darby, and more. The film received positive reviews from both critics and fans, and even got an Oscar nomination for Best Original Song.
While both versions are great in their own way, the unanimous decision seems to be that Damon’s True Grit takes the cake here. The 2010 film is a masterpiece that does justice to one of the best American novels of all time. The Coen Brothers love what they do, and this film proves it.
While the film does justice to the novel, it does take creative liberties that only work out in its favor. The cast is remarkable, Carter Burwell’s score is unforgettable, and Roger Deakins’ cinematography is absolutely beautiful.

Well, there you go. The people have spoken, and they chose the Coen Brothers’ remake as the ultimate winner of this debate. Do you agree?
Who Did True Grit Lose to for Best Picture at The Oscars?

Given True Grit‘s reception, it was truly shocking that the film didn’t win Best Picture at the Oscars, or any other trophy that night, for that matter. But who did they lose the award to?
At the 83rd Academy Awards, a total of ten films competed for the title of Best Picture. These were: Winter’s Bone, Toy Story 3, The Social Network, 127 Hours, The Kids Are All Right, Inception, The King’s Speech, Black Swan, The Fighter, and, of course, True Grit.
While the film was a strong contender, the trophy was handed over to Iain Canning, Emile Sherman, and Gareth Unwin for The King’s Speech, a historical drama revolving around King George VI.
Here are the 10 categories in which True Grit was nominated:
| CATEGORY | RECIPIENT | RESULT |
| Best Picture | Scott Rudin, Ethan Coen, and Joel Coen | Nominated |
| Best Director | Ethan Coen and Joel Coen | Nominated |
| Best Actor | Jeff Bridges | Nominated |
| Best Supporting Actress | Hailee Steinfeld | Nominated |
| Best Adapted Screenplay | Ethan Coen and Joel Coen | Nominated |
| Best Art Direction | Jess Gonchor and Nancy Haigh | Nominated |
| Best Cinematography | Roger Deakins | Nominated |
| Best Costume Design | Mary Zophres | Nominated |
| Best Sound Editing | Skip Lievsay and Craig Berkey | Nominated |
| Best Sound Mixing | Skip Lievsay, Craig Berkey, Greg Orloff, and Peter Kurland | Nominated |
Despite major nominations, the film ended up with zero for ten, shocking people even today. People are angry and still believe that at least Steinfeld should have bagged an award for her praiseworthy portrayal of Mattie.
Yes, it was up against some big guns, especially in the Best Picture category, but to be completely shut out from the night feels like a personal loss. Let us know what you think in the comments section below!
