The world of God of War is about to get larger as Santa Monica Studio is rumored to be developing a new franchise set within the iconic universe. Shared by user St. Elmo’s Fire on ResetEra, former Senior Writer at the studio, Lauren Signorino, mentioned that she “helped shape narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God of War universe” in her LinkedIn resume.
With Sons of Sparta out now and the Greek Trilogy remake on the way, it seems like Sony Santa Monica is preparing to expand the legendary franchise even more, beyond Kratos’ journey. Interestingly, the user stated that it’ll be a spinoff series, similar to how “CONTROL is in the Alan Wake universe”, so it won’t be focusing on Kratos.
A God of War Spinoff Game Is in the Works at Santa Monica Studio

It’s not unknown that Bluepoint was working on a live-service God of War title before the studio was unfortunately shut down recently. However, in the article about Bluepoint’s closure, Jason Schreier mentioned that Sony was planning to turn the series into “its own smaller version of the Marvel Cinematic Universe”, so this lines up with what he stated.
This new spinoff title will reportedly be helmed by Cory Barlog. Previously, Jason Schreier mentioned on ResetEra that Santa Monica’s next title is “not a new IP, but it might feel like one”, and a fresh spinoff game set in the God of War universe fits that description like a glove.
Lauren’s LinkedIn resume also states that her role at Santa Monica Studio included “developing characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed IP,” which basically confirms that Kratos won’t be the focus of Cory Barlog’s next title, nor will it be a completely new title disconnected from God of War.
Atreus won’t be the main protagonist of Santa Monica’s next game either, as previously hinted by member shinobi602 on ResetEra. So, this spinoff title will likely feature a new cast of characters and maybe a new protagonist as well. It’s unclear whether Kratos or characters we’ve already seen in the previous games will have some involvement in the spinoff.
The God of War universe is rich in lore, so this doesn’t come off as a surprise. However, one could wonder whether Sony Santa Monica Studio has too much on its plate currently, with this new rumored spinoff title, the original trilogy remakes, and the live-action adaptation on Prime Video. Only time will tell how the studio aims to expand the IP.
The New God of War Spinoff Could Be Revealed This Year
So, Cory Barlog’s next game being a God of War spinoff is all but confirmed. As for when the game will be officially revealed to the public, both NateTheHate and shinobi602 believe that it’ll likely be announced this Summer. So, we could be looking at a potential May State of Play or Summer Game Fest reveal.
Recently, Christopher Judge, Kratos’ actor in the Norse duology, teased that Sony Santa Monica’s next title will be revealed this Summer, saying that “you’ll be hearing about what we’re doing probably late Summer.” Now, this sounds like Judge might be involved with the studio’s next project, but nothing is confirmed, so take everything with a grain of salt for now.
Sons of Sparta already demonstrated a significant shift in the series by reshaping the IP into a 2D Metroidvania package. It’s evident that Santa Monica Studio is prepared to take risks with the IP and expand it in meaningful ways.
With the former Senior Writer mentioning a new franchise being developed within the God of War universe, it’s only a matter of time before we see whose journey players will be able to experience next.
