Billy Butcher did not have much to look forward to if he ever got the chance to slay Homelander and the Supe community. In The Boys comics, it was revealed that he was even chasing the wrong guy the entire time, with Black Noir being responsible for the crimes that were attributed to Homelander, even the assault on Butcher’s wife.
Butcher is eventually killed by Hughie in the comics. However, Billy Butcher’s story did not end there, as Dear Becky, a spin-off of The Boys, dove deep into the history and justifications of the actions that Butcher took over the course of The Boys. The circumstances of his death made the legacy chapters of The Boys even more poignant, especially given all that Butcher armed Hughie with in a post-Homelander world, still replete with politicians and supes.
Butcher Had to Lie to Get the Death He Wants in The Boys

After it was discovered that it was Black Noir who had done all the horrible things to Becky and not Homelander, Butcher managed to slay the clone. However, it did not bring him any solace that the monster that was responsible for the murder of his wife was dead. He would then try to initiate his plan to take out all the Supes in the world, with a modified version of Compound V. At this point, Frenchie, The Female, and MM are also dead, killed by Butcher.
Hughie is the last surviving member of the Boys, along with Butcher. When Hughie finds out about his plans, they have a scuffle atop the Empire State Building, falling to one of the lower platforms. While Hughie is impaled in the thigh, Butcher is injured a lot more severely. Not wanting to be an invalid for the rest of his life, Butcher tells Hughie that he was behind his parents’ deaths, which was a lie. Hughie then stabs Butcher, killing him.
Dear Becky Is a Poignant End to Butcher’s Story

Dear Becky takes place twelve years after the events of the mainline The Boys comic. Hughie is finally marrying Annie, and comes across a diary addressed to Becky, written by Billy Butcher. It details his thoughts throughout his tenure in The Boys and how his mind went to genocide. As per the diary, he was thinking about the hurt the supes had caused Becky, and how much of a positive influence she was on his life.
Hughie even ends the comic writing to Becky, telling her that she was with him, in his thoughts, till the very end, before putting the message in a bottle and throwing it to sea. The comic in general was able to bring a little more tragedy to the death of Billy Butcher, who was pretty unsympathetic by the end of the comic. However, Dear Becky recentered what the character was all about- a forgone conclusion in the wake of a tragedy. Perhaps the show is going to treat him differently with its finale.
