Princess Knight is not a single manga or anime. Over the past seventy years, there have been multiple rewrites, direct sequels, and animated versions. The original manga, Ribbon no Kishi, began its serialization in 1953 in Kodansha’s Shoujo Club magazine. It was one of the first manga that was specifically targeted at the female demographic.

The plot is centered around Sapphire, who was born a girl, but was declared to be a boy so that she could inherit the throne in the future. After this, a sequel manga titled The Twin Knights was published in 1958 in Kodansha’s Nakayoshi magazine and ran till June 1958. This manga switched the POV to Sapphire’s children, Prince Daisy and Princess Violetta, instead, exploring how the legacy of the kingdom impacted their lives.

And then, the author completely rebooted the franchise in 1963 with a new version of the manga that was serialised in Nakayoshi magazine. This iteration has an expanded storyline and much better art. Furthermore, the manga was adapted into an anime in 1967 by Mushi Production. Decades later, a 1999 animated short film, also titled Ribbon no Kishi, was released.

This isn’t the first time that Tezuka’s manga has had multiple adaptations. A popular example is Dororo, which was also written by Tezuka in 1967, and was then adapted twice into an anime. It is a really great move, as a story as classic as The Princess Knight wouldn’t be known by many modern audiences if there weren’t a remake.

Osamu Tezuka – The Legendary Author Behind The Ribbon Hero

Osamu Tezuka is a historical figure consistently referred to as the “God of Manga.” Tezuka’s legacy is the foundation of the modern anime industry. Before his debut, manga were mostly formatted as brief comic strips. Tezuka introduced his techniques to the printed page, drawing inside varied panel layouts with not just dialogues, but also action.

His most recognizable work is Astro Boy, which is a 1952 science fiction manga that popularized the robot subgenre. He also created Black Jack, which is an episodic medical drama focusing on a skilled but unlicensed surgeon.

His other major works include Kimba the White Lion, which was an early epic focusing on wildlife and human encroachment. His most ambitious project was Phoenix (Hi no Tori), an unfinished, multi-volume saga exploring themes of reincarnation, immortality, and human cruelty across different eras of time.

Netflix’s upcoming release of The Ribbon Hero will serve as a major test of how well Tezuka’s original 1953 concepts can perform within the modern streaming landscape.
