Did House of the Dragon Season 3 Finally Fix George R.R. Martin’s ‘Missing Child’ Criticism?

Spoiler Alert !!!
This article discusses spoilers for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4, along with story details from Fire & Blood.

House of the Dragon‘s second season took heat for one particular change to George R.R. Martin‘s Fire & Blood that the author himself wasn’t happy about. Now, Season 3 may finally be circling back to address it. In House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 4, one moment between Phia Saban’s Helaena Targaryen and her mother, Alicent, played by Olivia Cooke, hints at the former’s pregnancy.

Alicent studies her daughter’s body as Helaena instinctively pulls away and covers herself, and the shock on both their faces says everything the scene leaves unspoken. It’s a subtle hint, but fans believe that it is a setup for the show to finally introduce Helaena’s missing child from Season 2’s Blood & Cheese storyline, Maelor.

Interestingly, there was another hint about the pregnancy dropped in Episode 2 of the season. When Helaena sees a caterpillar, she strangely murmurs, “It’s not the season.” Now, fans also go back to the trailer for the season, where they are pretty sure that they see a shot of Helaena in the middle of childbirth.

Putting it all together, the show seemingly brings Aegon and Helaena’s third child, whom Martin was so upset to see written out. However, we aren’t sure whether bringing him back this late genuinely fixes the issues Martin raised.

Why George R.R. Martin Was Upset Over Maelor’s Absence

Back in September 2024, Martin published a now-deleted blog post titled Beware the Butterflies, laying out his frustrations with Ryan Condal’s adaptation (via The Guardian). His issue with the second season premiere centered around the absence of Prince Maelor, the youngest son of Aegon II and Helaena, in Fire & Blood.

In the book, the couple has three children, twins Jaehaerys and Jaehaera, and two-year-old Maelor, when the Blood & Cheese storyline takes place. During the infamous scene, the assassins force Helaena to choose which of her sons should die. She selects Maelor to spare her heir, only for the killers to murder Jaehaerys instead.

The show also adapted this darkest chapter from the book, but made a major change. House of the Dragon removed Maelor completely, leaving Helaena with only the twins. Jaehaerys still gets killed in the tragic sequence. In the post, Martin explained that he had reluctantly agreed to delay the character, believing Maelor would simply be born later, in Season 3. However, he felt that Maelor’s absence weakened Helaena’s choice.

Martin warned that this “butterfly effect” would ripple outward, weakening Helaena’s reason for taking her own life, erasing the horrifying Bitterbridge sequence, and loosening the chain of events that ultimately leads to Rhaenyra’s downfall.

Is the Show Setting Up Helaena’s Tragic Future Story?

If Helaena really is pregnant in House of the Dragon Season 3, the timing is grim. In Fire & Blood, Prince Maelor Targaryen dies brutally at Bitterbridge during the Dance of the Dragons. Maelor’s death is what breaks Helaena and drives her to take her own life, an event that sparks riots in King’s Landing and helps topple Rhaenyra.

By reintroducing the child now, the show appears to be searching for a new route to that same tragic destination. Rhaenyra will have to make a terrible choice when she comes to know about Helaena’s pregnancy. It will lead to Maelor’s potential death and Helaena’s suicide. It is also likely that Maelor may die in childbirth, which also leads to Helaena spiralling.

So while Season 3 may be honoring the spirit of Martin’s criticism, Helaena’s path still seems to lead somewhere heartbreaking. The details have changed, but the tragedy likely hasn’t.
