House of the Dragon: What Happens to Ser Lorent in the Book?

Spoiler Alert !!!
Spoiler Warning for House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 1 & 2 and George R.R. Martin's Fire & Blood

House of the Dragon Season 3 may have delivered some of its most shocking deaths yet, but one side character’s unknown fate still leaves us wondering. Ser Lorent Marbrand, Rhaenyra’s Lord Commander of the Queensguard, made a tough decision in the first episode of Season 3 that cost him not only his position but possibly his life.

Before the Battle of the Gullet, Jace ordered Ser Lorent to bar the door to Rhaenyra’s chamber to prevent her from going to war herself. He defied the queen’s command to open the door, leaving her with no choice but to remain inside. Episode 2 showed the consequences of the whole fiasco after Baela arrived on Dragonstone with Jace’s dead body. A repentant Ser Lorent acknowledged that he had failed Rhaenyra and offered to forfeit his life.

The source material presents a different version of Ser Lorent’s story, in which he remained a loyal servant of Rhaenyra and was with her when she ascended the Iron Throne. The queen also never sentenced him to death, unlike in the show; instead, he tragically perished after a riot broke out in King’s Landing.

House of the Dragon Completely Changed Ser Lorent Marbrand’s Arc

Ser Lorent’s story in House of the Dragon differs significantly from the version told in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood. While the HBO series leaves his fate uncertain after the Battle of the Gullet, the book gives him a much larger role during the later stages of the Dance of the Dragons.

He remains steadfastly loyal to Queen Rhaenyra from the moment the civil war begins, joining her Queensguard on Dragonstone alongside Ser Erryk Cargyll. His unwavering devotion earns him greater responsibility after Ser Steffon Darklyn dies during the Sowing of the Seeds, with Rhaenyra naming Ser Lorent the new Lord Commander of the Queensguard.

As Lord Commander, he is entrusted with rebuilding the Queensguard by selecting six worthy knights to serve the queen. Ser Lorent also becomes one of Rhaenyra’s closest military advisers, urging her to arrest Addam Velaryon and Nettles following the shocking betrayals at Tumbleton.

Unlike the show, which suggests his story may have ended after falling out of Rhaenyra’s favor, the book depicts Ser Lorent remaining at her side until the very end of her rule. His loyalty ultimately costs him his life during the riot in King’s Landing, where he leads a force of knights and men-at-arms into Flea Bottom in an attempt to restore order.

The mission ends in disaster, with only a small number of his men surviving, while Ser Glendon Goode later recovers Ser Lorent’s body to prevent it from being desecrated by the mob. By giving him a complete character arc that ends in a heroic but tragic death, Fire & Blood presents him as one of Rhaenyra’s most faithful supporters, making his reduced role and ambiguous fate in House of the Dragon an especially notable departure from the source material.

Is Ser Lorent Dead? HOTD May Have Left His Fate Off-Screen

Although House of the Dragon never explicitly shows Ser Lorent’s death, Season 3 strongly suggests that he is likely to have been killed off-screen.

In House of the Dragon Season 3 Episode 2, Rhaenyra flies to King’s Landing after learning that Aemond has left the capital undefended by departing for Harrenhal on Vhagar. With the city’s strongest protector gone, she sees an opportunity to seize the Iron Throne by infiltrating the Red Keep. Before leaving Dragonstone, however, Rhaenyra delivers one final command: “Let Ser Lorent choose how he will die.”

We never saw what happened to Ser Lorent, or whether he actually chose his manner of death. Given the gravity of his perceived failure and Rhaenyra’s final words to him, viewers may have interpreted this as an implied off-screen death.

It’s uncertain whether Episode 3 of House of the Dragon Season 3 will revisit this storyline and officially confirm Ser Lorent’s death. Regardless, this marks a significant departure from Fire & Blood, where he survives well beyond these events and continues serving Rhaenyra until his death during the King’s Landing riot.
