Fans Hail Sonic 3 Announcement as Jim Carrey Franchise Raises Expectations After Scott Pilgrim Success
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 hypes up fans with a new set photo, somehow hinting that the production is moving along swiftly. Director Jeff Fowler shared a dramatic photo of the set with a clapper board and also a first look at Shadow the Hedgehog.
The full unveiling will have to wait as the image only showed the character’s pair of shoes and clenched fists, though fans have seen the face in the last movie’s post-credit scene. Still, it was enough to generate anticipation from the viewers.
Director Teases Sonic the Hedgehog 3 Film Production
As fans have seen on social media, director Jeff Fowler has posted a sneak peek of Sonic the Hedgehog 3, meaning he’s back to helm another fun-filled adventure movie. Check out the post below:

Pat Casey, Josh Miller, and John Whittington are also tapped to write the script, while Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic. Colleen O’Shaughnessey and Idris Elba will also reprise their roles as the voices of Tails and Knuckles, respectively.
The voice of Shadow the Hedgehog remains a mystery, which makes the sneak peek image more intriguing. Other actors joining the franchise are James Marsden, Tika Tumpter, Lee Majdoub, Natasha Rothwell, and Adam Pally.
Jim Carrey’s status in the movie remains unclear as the studio still has not confirmed whether he will return as Dr. Robotnik. Fans would remember the actor has notably expressed his desire to retire from acting.
If Carrey decides to leave the industry altogether, fans can expect that the character will no longer make any appearance in the film as the producers have pledged to never recast the villain. As per Toby Ascher’s interview via IGN:
“Jim Carrey is always a member of the Sonic family, and he will always have a place in these movies and TV shows as long as he’d like to be around. We love Jim, and he’s so special, and what he does with Robotnik is so incredible, we would love him as long as he would like to be there with us.”
Meanwhile, fans expect a lot from the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 3 after the success of Netflix’s Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. The character has been referenced a lot in the show; even in the comics, the game has been mentioned a couple of times.

The first film grossed over $319 million while the sequel earned $405 million at the worldwide box office. Sonic the Hedgehog 3 arrives in theaters on December 20, 2024.
