Actress Jennifer Lawrence is one of the biggest stars in Hollywood and has starred in multiple acclaimed projects. She is mostly well-known for her starring role as Katniss Everdeen in the young-adult fantasy franchise The Hunger Games. The actress starred in all four of the films based on the novel franchise, which earned over $3.1 billion globally.

The story is set in a dystopian world where every year a pair of tributes are chosen from twelve districts to compete in a survivor-based game show called The Hunger Games. When Jennifer Lawrence was cast as Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games, she was reportedly already filming for X-Men: First Class, in which she played the role of a younger Mystique. Lawrence reportedly beat out prominent female actors such as Hailee Steinfeld, Saoirse Ronan, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Emma Roberts for the role.

Lawrence revealed that she was initially hesitant about the role as she knew the level of fame that starring in a young-adult fantasy franchise would lead to. She then decided to go for it after falling in love with the character. She said in an interview with NPR,

“A yes-or-no question very rarely changes your entire life…I mostly just said, ‘You know what? I love this character. I love this movie. I believe in it, and I’m going to say ‘yes’ for the same reasons that I would say ‘yes’ to any indie.’”

Jennifer Lawrence also reportedly trained extensively for the role, talking up archery, rock and tree climbing, parkour, and more to be ready for the arena sequences. She reportedly had an injury on the last day of her training schedule when she ran into a wall while running at top speed. She spoke about her experience training for the film,

“I really, really enjoyed archery. I had an amazing instructor, Khatuna [Lorig]. She was Georgian. She was an excellent instructor — very, very strict. If I had bad form, she would pinch my ear…It totally changed my body….when I went back for the fitting for the second movie for Catching Fire, my shoulders were 2 inches broader and my right arm is 1 inch longer than my left arm.”

The actress’ performance as Katniss Everdeen was universally lauded and the film made over $694 million at the box office, leading to a sequel.

After the mammoth success of The Hunger Games, the studio behind the film quickly commissioned a sequel based on the second novel Catching Fire. Jennifer Lawrence had to go back to training for the second film, which had a hectic schedule. Lawrence went back to her training for archery, swimming, running, and combat for the second film.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, Lawrence revealed that she had injured her ear while training and had also burst her eardrum while filming the cornucopia scenes. She said,

“I went deaf in one ear for months. . . . But that wasn’t actually physically challenging. It was just ear-challenging because I got all of these ear infections from the diving and the water and all of that stuff. And then a jet from one of the cornucopia scenes punctured my eardrum.”

The actress joined the sets in February a day after winning her Oscar for Best Actress for the film Silver Linings Playbook and she was also set to reprise her role as Mystique in X-Men: Day of Future Past. However, the actress made time for the Hunger Games sequel and would go on to return for the last two films.
