Nearly three decades ago, the world came across the devastating news of the death of the child beauty queen JonBenét Ramsey at the age of only 6. After seven hours after her being reported missing, her body was found in the basement of her home at 755, 15th Street in Boulder, Colorado. That was when the world came crashing down on the Ramsey family.
Since then, there has been a lot of debate on how this case, which was later ruled out to be a homicide, took place. But more spotlight was on the child beauty queen’s parents, American beauty pageant winner Patricia Ann Ramsey aka Patsy Ramsey, and businessman John Ramsey. The pair have, since, been the center of a lot, staying the talk of the town for quite some time.
Now that Netflix has returned with the documentary Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, the buzz surrounding the Ramsey family has grown louder than ever. After hearing about the vicious details of the six-year-old Ramsey’s death and the allegations imposed on her parents that followed, now people want to know more about what happened to the other family members.
For one, the questions have also surrounded the topic of how Patsy left the world less than a decade after her daughter’s death. That being said, here’s all we know about the demise of Patsy and what she had to say about her daughter, the other members Ramsey family and where they are now, and what JonBenét’s parents were charged with after her death.
Patsy Ramsey Died Due to Ovarian Cancer in 2006
In the Ramsey family’s case, one of the most talked-about people is JonBenét Ramsey’s mother Patsy Ramsey, who won the Miss West Virginia beauty title in 1977, when she was barely in her 20s. At only 23, she tied the knot with the divorcee businessman John Ramsey, then 35, who had three children from his first wife, Lucinda Pasch, on November 5, 1980.
That’s when the Ramsey family affair started. A little over six years after their marriage, their son Burke Ramsey was born on January 27, 1987. Soon after, their daughter and the late superstar JonBenét was born on August 6, 1990. But as happy as their life seemed with Patsy getting even her daughter in children’s beauty contests, that was hardly the case.
In 1993, Patsy was diagnosed with stage 4 ovarian cancer at the age of 36. However, back then, she received treatment for it and seemingly healed (via The Denver Post). But while tragedy followed with her losing her only daughter in 1996 in what was reported to be death by strangulation and a blow to the head, that wasn’t the only heartbreak she had to undergo.
After treatment of her ovarian cancer, Patsy was in remission for nine years until 2002, when a recurrence occurred. This time around, she didn’t prove to be lucky enough to further extend her life for a few more years from this chronic illness and ended up taking her last breath at her father’s house on June 24, 2006, due to ovarian cancer, aged 49.
While Patsy Ramsey reportedly died with her husband by her side (via The Atlanta Journal-Constitution vis Legacy.com), she is buried next to her daughter JonBenét at the St. James Episcopal Cemetery in Marietta, Georgia.
John and Patsy Ramsey were Charged in JonBenét Ramsey’s Case
As confounding as JonBenét Ramsey’s homicide case was, it didn’t fail to pull the young celebrity’s parents “under an umbrella of suspicion” in the eyes of Boulder law enforcement officials because of their possible involvement in the crime (via CNN). But the worst part is that, besides losing their daughter, the two also had to fight against charges levied on them.
Per NBC News, John and Patsy Ramsey were charged with child abuse resulting in death and accessory to a crime in their daughter’s murder by a Colorado grand jury in 1999. However, Boulder County District Attorney Alex Hunter reportedly refused to file charges back then, ostensibly due to a lack of evidence in the case.
For 10 years after that, the pair spent their time trying to clear their names while defending themselves against the allegations by insisting that the one responsible for their daughter’s murder was an intruder. Finally, in 2008, prosecutors cleared the Ramsey parents and their elder child Burke Ramsey in JonBenét’s killing case, per NBC News.
Additionally, Lou Smit, a police detective who long argued with the same notion as the remaining Ramseys, once shared Patsy’s last words to him in an interview clip excerpted from the Netflix documentary Cold Case: Who Killed JonBenét Ramsey, saying, “The last words she said to me were, ‘Lou, I don’t have much time left. Please catch this guy before I die.’”
What Did Patsy Ramsey Say About Her Daughter?
Besides consistently maintaining that neither she nor her husband were involved in the brutal homicide case of their beloved celebrity child, Patsy Ramsey also pushed for her daughter’s killer to be found. During this, she openly criticized the way JonBenét’s case was handled by law enforcement, saying during an appearance on Larry King Live in 2000:
The police that were there the morning of the 26th, taking evidence, have a lot of tangible evidence. They did a good job at collecting evidence. We have fibers. We have DNA. We have a lot of evidence. The problem was that then they did not take the evidence to where it would lead. […] We have to move ahead. We have to try to find this killer and get him off the street.
As for her joining beauty pageants at such a young age, Patsy defended her daughter’s choices, saying JonBenét begged her to let her participate in them and that she bonded with her over the experience. In a book she co-wrote with John, The Death of Innocence: The Untold Story of JonBenet’s Murder and How Its Exploitation Compromised the Pursuit of Truth, she shared:
I decided if this was what she liked to do, then I would see if I could make it possible. I always worried that my cancer would return someday, so I was glad to have found an activity that we could have fun with together. Mother-daughter experiences were to be treasures for me, now more than ever before. If God did take me before she grew up, I reasoned, I could leave her these memories.
With that being said, it’s unarguable that both Patsy and John must have spent a lot of time crying and worrying over who took their beloved child away from them at such a young age, determined to find the identity of their daughter’s killer. And now that those memories are resurfacing and being revisited, things don’t seem to have changed much.
Where is JonBenét Ramsey’s Remaining Family Now?
Over the years, the Ramsey family has managed to not only get their name cleared from JonBenét’s homicide case (well, mostly) but have also progressed considerably in their respective lives. To start, the young beauty pageant queen’s direct family included her mother Patsy, father John, and elder brother Burke Ramsey.
Per PEOPLE, Burke reportedly worked as a software engineer as of 2012 – when he was around 25 – had a girlfriend, and lived a generally quiet life. Talking to the media outlet, John described his son as “pretty quiet” while noting, “He’s certainly matured. He’s got a 401(k) plan and an IRA, and he did it all on his own.“
John Ramsey, in the meanwhile, briefly dated Natalee Holloway’s mother, Beth Twitty a little while after Patsy passed away. Then came his third marriage in 2011, when he decided to tie the knot with his third wife, fashion designer Jan Rousseaux. The pair, reportedly, split their time between Michigan and Las Vegas, as of 2016.
