Deadpool 4: MCU’s New Cash Cow Ryan Reynolds’ Shock Update Can Be Bad News for Kevin Feige but It’s Exactly What Fans of Channing Tatum’s Gambit Needed

Fans might be wondering what’s next for Ryan Reynolds in his role as Deadpool after the colossal success of his MCU entry. Deadpool & Wolverine grossed a total of $1.34 billion at the box office, making it the highest-grossing R-rated film in the industry. However, Reynolds has no immediate plans to return to the role in a leading capacity much to Kevin Feige’s dismay.
Instead, Reynolds shared that he would love to play the side character in another potential Marvel movie. He shared his support for Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie and added that he would happily play a side role in the film. Tatum finally got to play the character in Deadpool 3, satisfying longtime fans of the character.
Ryan Reynolds’ Future Plans For Deadpool Might Not Make Kevin Feige Happy
Ryan Reynolds is going to take a big step back with his role as Deadpool. While it is one of the most lucrative things in his career right now, Reynolds admits to Andrew Garfield that it is also taking a toll on him. Both actors appeared together for a chat on Variety’s Actors on Actors and spoke in detail about many things including Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth role.
Reynolds told Garfield that Deadpool works mainly because of “scarcity and surprise.” He shared that the scarcity part of the films was mainly due to it swallowing his whole life. He further went into how filming Deadpool was a tedious process, beginning with “development through post-production into marketing and promo.”
He shared that he didn’t want to be an absentee parent in his and Blake Lively‘s children. He further told Garfield that he did not make his latest movie with Shawn Levy into a commercial for further sequels. Instead, he went for a complete experience, sharing, “It’s important sometimes to make space for a movie to just be a movie.”
Reynolds further went into why he couldn’t make Deadpool a central character in Kevin Feige‘s Marvel universe, at least in the near future. He shared that he only becomes the central character when “you take everything away from him.” Reynolds added, “You have to create a situation where he’s so much the underdog, and I don’t think I can do that again.”
The Green Lantern star also answers what’s next for the character: a supporting character in Channing Tatum’s Gambit movie. Reynolds shared with the Spider-Man actor:
So I think if he comes back, it’s going to be in someone else’s movie. Channing Tatum was so excited to play Gambit [in Deadpool & Wolverine], and I would happily be the fifth banana in his movie or anyone else’s.
Marvel fans and Feige wouldn’t be so happy about Reynolds potentially shutting down a Deadpool 4 in the near future. Reynolds’ comment also calls into question the future of Hugh Jackman’s Wolverine in the franchise.
Will Ryan Reynolds Get To Star In Channing Tatum’s Gambit Film?
Remy LeBeau aka Gambit was a role that Channing Tatum had pursued for years. In the third X-Men film, different actors were considered for the role of Gambit, including Keanu Reeves and Josh Holloway. Tatum was eventually chosen for the role, but the character was written out before he was officially cast (via Uproxx).
In 2014, X-Men producer Lauren Donner shared that she had planned a Gambit film with Tatum (via Empire). Fox even gave the film a release date of October 7, 2016. However, the film went nowhere despite plans being discussed even in 2022.
In an X post, Reynolds shared a gratitude post thanking Tatum for taking on the role in his film. He shared that Tatum and his character were easy to root for in the upcoming films. His post read:
Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play. His story is similar to mine in that he spent a decade trying to put the most comic-accurate version of Gambit on the big screen. Remy LeBeau is grafted to his soul and needs to come out and deal. And Gambit found his author in Chan. He’s… pic.twitter.com/9Hz7qbZ85S

Tatum too thanked Reynolds for reviving Gambit. He shared that he thought he had lost the character forever, but Reynolds fought for him and his character. He shared that he would owe Reynolds forever. He wrote on X:
These pictures are almost 10 years apart to the day. I sat in the audience when Ryan Reynolds showed his first peek of Deadpool 1 to the world and I think I ran back stage right after and found him and I think I just hugged him and was like holy shit you did it man. During an interview with EW, Reynolds shared that Marvel was obsessed with Tatum’s Gambit role. He shared that it was a situation similar to his Deadpool character, explaining that once you show the role’s success and appeal, it becomes something they can’t do without.
