Ben Stiller Was Terrified Adam Scott Would Ditch ‘Severance’ for Good After Apple’s 1 Egregious Move

A chance encounter, a minor adjustment in the script, or a single casting decision can change the whole trajectory of a TV show. This holds true for Adam Scott, who has carved a niche for himself in the industry because he has this understated charm with a hint of relatability. Severance is a phenomenal show that will earn him more accolades than his breakout series.

Before that, the actor was a part of other notable projects, but nothing quite like Apple’s sci-fi show. But what did he have to do for this role and was it the right decision? Let’s find out!

We all loved Adam Scott as Ben in Parks and Recreation, and then Party Down where we learned that he has the ability to embody both grim and deeply human characters. Scott has made a career out of playing roles that are authentic and memorable. Perhaps, it’s this quality that led him to be cast in Severance.

According to The New Yorker, Ben Stiller was quite impressed by Dan Erickson’s pilot script for the show, and Scott seemed to be the perfect lead. Scott was Stiller’s office bully in The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, and the latter thought that the two shared aspirations from wanting to break free from the comedic pigeonhold.

The streaming service didn’t believe in Scott, and they were in a year-long deadlock, demanding an audition from the actor. But Stiller’s faith in his co-star did not falter, even though he wasn’t sure if an actor of Scott’s caliber would agree to such demands. However, Scott auditioned for the role because he was truly impressed by the pilot and successfully secured the role of Mark Scout.

His humility and dedication led to the role that is now the most talked-about performance of his career. Erickson’s inspiration for the show stemmed from his own experiences of being employed at a boring office job. The dread of working daily planted a seed of a workplace thriller in his brain.

Thus, Severance was born! It revolves around Lumon industries where employees can go through a procedure that splits their consciousness into an “innie” and “outie.” This would lead to two separate selves, one for work and one for home.

Erickson had envisioned Scott while writing Mark Scout, and the actor’s performance struck the delicate balance that was required for this role. In 2022, he earned his first Emmy nomination for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Drama Series, and now with season 2 rolling out, we can expect to see even more of Scott’s brilliance.
