NBA legend Kobe Bryant is known for his incredible discipline and work ethic. The Lakers shooting guard has been regarded as one of the (if not the) greatest of all time due to his incredible work on the basketball court. The legendary player passed away after a fatal helicopter crash five years ago in 2020.
Many fans look up to Bryant, but the Black Mamba reportedly had a movie inspiration of his own. Years ago, Bryant reportedly met with legendary American footballer Rudy Ruettiger at a game and mentioned that the 1993 biopic Rudy changed his life. He revealed later that the film inspired him to develop a keen work ethic and discipline.
Kobe Bryant credits his work ethic and mentality to the 1993 film Rudy
Kobe Bryant began his basketball career straight out of high school. The son of popular player Joe Bryant, Kobe Bryant spent his entire career with the LA Lakers and won the NBA Championship five times. He was an All-Star eighteen times and was even declared an MVP. He is considered in the leagues of legends like Michael Jordan and LeBron James.
Bryant is known for his hard work and discipline despite his talents. Many stories of him waking up early in the morning to train and staying away from the party life have come out since his untimely death due to a helicopter crash along with his daughter in 2020. He is popularly known as Black Mamba.
While he was incredibly talented, Bryant admitted on many occasions that his sense of discipline came from the sports drama Rudy. The film, based on American footballer Rudy Ruettiger, was reportedly a huge inspiration for the NBA legend after he first watched it in high school. He said that after watching the film (via YouTube),
I made a promise to myself from that day that I was gonna work that hard every single day. So, that when I do retire, I have no regrets. And that was the most important thing for me, [it] is to leave no stone unturned [and] get better every single day. And if I live that way, then over time you know I’d have something that was beautiful…that was my philosophy.
He mentioned that his life’s philosophy was pretty simple and that the film Rudy gave him the inspiration necessary to work hard every day to reach the point of greatness.
Rudy Ruettiger recounted the day he met Kobe Bryant at an NBA game
Rudy Ruettiger’s life story as an American footballer hoping to play for the University of Notre Dame despite all odds against him was captured to perfection in Rudy. The 1993 film starred Lord of the Rings star Sean Astin as the eponymous football hopeful who stops at nothing to achieve his dream. The film earned $22 million against a $13 million budget (via The Numbers).
Since the film developed a cult status, Ruettiger has become a celebrity and his story has inspired millions. The legend reportedly met Kobe Bryant at an NBA game where his daughter was set to sing the national anthem. Bryant reportedly fanboyed hard at Ruettiger after getting to know who he was and said that the film changed his life.
Rudy Ruettiger spoke to ESPN about meeting the Black Mamba and their interaction,
We talked about struggles and I said it’s not how hard you take a hit, it’s how hard you get back up. When you hit a certain status in life you want to help people. It meant so much to hear him say that the movie changed his life. It blew my mind. I couldn’t believe it. What do you say to a guy like Kobe who is so excited to meet you?
Bryant even reportedly told a Lakers staff member that Ruettiger was the biggest influence on his life.
Rudy is available to rent on Apple TV.
