“Don’t tell Peter, but…”: Ian McKellen Did Not Part With Gandalf Lightly – Everything ‘The Lord of the Rings’ Star Took Home From Set

As Season 3 of The Rings of Power is officially under the works, fans can’t wait for the showdown with Halbrand (or Sauron) to reach its next stage. But while fans revel in what lies ahead, no one can move on from the magic that The Lord of the Rings weaved, including Sir Ian McKellen.
It’s been more than 2 decades since the curtain drew on the franchise, with the release of The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King in 2003. While McKellen did return a few years later to New Zealand for the shoot of The Hobbit trilogy, there are still some happy memories he holds of his experience, including souvenirs.
When the Fellowship reunited for another Council
Sir Ian McKellen is no stranger to being a part of successful franchises. But The Lord of the Rings universe will surely top his list. After all, who wouldn’t cherish working with the likes of Peter Jackson, Martin Freeman, Viggo Mortensen, Elijah Wood, and Cate Blanchett, over a span of 6 movies?
It doesn’t come as a shock that the camaraderie amongst the cast members is great, especially the members of the Fellowship of the Ring, the group of 9 that set from the Council of Elrond on a mission to take the ring to Mount Doom.
The Fellowship didn’t last long in the movie, with its members getting separated even before the film came to an end. But when the actors reunited years down the lane to mark the 15th year of The Fellowship of the Ring, they all reveled in the stories of their past.
It doesn’t come as a shock that some (metaphorical) tears were shed, and some old secrets were spilled, including a secret that the X-Men star would dearly want to keep hidden from Peter Jackson.
Sir Ian McKellen has kept a handful of items from his LOTR days
In conversation with the Fellowship years down the lane, Elijah Woods had some intriguing questions for Sir Ian McKellen. From what’s the 85-year-old’s favorite spot in New Zealand, to how he returned to normalcy after many years at ‘the sea’.
Memories aren’t the only thing that McKellen has preserved from the time though. When asked what things he had kept with him after all these years, the Gods and Monsters star had quite a list.
In response to Elijah Wood’s question, he said,
Eternal gratitude for being included in one of the great film adventures of all time. I keep Glamdring in my hatstand and the pointy hat in the basement, often worn by visiting youngsters. Gandalf’s staff is behind the bar in my Thames-side pub The Grapes, in East London. Don’t tell Peter, but the keys to Bag End are hanging up at home. (Empire)
The souvenirs serve to remind him of the experience he had all those years back. The adventures he had a part in. The friendships he had forged, both on and off the screen. And most importantly, the impact he had created as Gandalf, the affable wizard.
The souvenirs still lie in wait, hoping that a time will come when their services are needed again.
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring is streaming on Prime Video.
