The first trailer of the upcoming MCU film The Fantastic Four: First Steps was recently released. The franchise will see the introduction of Marvel’s first family with Pedro Pascal leading the incredible superheroes. The film stars The Bear’s Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Vanessa Kirby, and Joseph Quinn in lead roles.
The superheroes have already been adapted to live-action twice, and Reed Richards has once been shown in the MCU (John Krasinski in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness). However, the franchise is all set to delve deep into the lore of the Four without just focusing on their origin stories like the other adaptations.
With Galactus set to be the main antagonist in the film and a possible Robert Downey Jr. as Doctor Doom cameo in the mix, The Fantastic Four: First Steps is gearing up to be one of the most anticipated MCU entries in a while. The film comes before the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday films, where the Fantastic Four may have a lot to contribute.
The trailer of the film already gives a hint as to what the core powers of the four are but there is obviously more to them than just those powers. The cosmic radiation accident that they undergo gives them not just mutant abilities but also brings them together as heroes against interstellar forces that attack Earth. Here is how each of the Four will be able to defend the planet.
1. Reed Richards a.k.a Mister Fantastic
The leader of the Fantastic Four is a genius. Pedro Pascal plays the fourth (technically fifth) live-action iteration of Reed Richards in the upcoming MCU film and he seems to be taking charge of the team in the trailer. A prodigal physicist, Reed Richards in the comics began peaking in academics as young as middle school and earned several degrees.
The cosmic radiation that is the origin of the Fantastic Four gives mutated abilities to each of the members of the team. Richards gets the power of elasticity and is able to stretch his body to epic proportions. The radiations render his body so malleable that he is able to change physical form and even increase his strength.
Many stories in the comics have depicted the extent of elastic abilities. He is able to go through the tiniest spaces while also being extremely helpful as a protective layer for other superheroes of his team. He can also change his form to an almost liquid-like material that allows him to be extremely fluid.
His elasticity (and staying in his humanoid form) also requires extreme brain power from him. At his most relaxed state, he is known to ‘melt slowly’ and if his body is stretched to a huge degree, he loses significant energy. Shocks also render him powerless for a stipulated time and that has been one of his biggest weaknesses.
His genius intellect is often his biggest superpower, allowing him to make complex decisions and craft extremely precise scientific tools that aid the team in defeating the threat. He has eighteen PhDs and is a prodigy in physics and engineering, applying both to create his magnum opus invention: The Bridge.
The interdimensional portal is best known for its use during the Civil War and Secret Invasion storylines. With the Bridge, Richards is able to peek into other dimensions and even travel there. With the help of the Bridge, he has formed the Council of Reeds, a group of interdimensional Reed Richard variants who help their counterparts when the need arises.
Reed Richards is also one of Earth’s best judo masters. His combat experience as part of the Fantastic Four has made him one of the best fighters on the planet. The radiations have also been speculated to have increased his intellect and his genius has kept the team afloat due to his inventions and investments.
2. Sue Storm a.k.a Invisible Woman
Sue Storm, played by Vanessa Kirby in The Fantastic Four: First Steps is able to turn herself invisible by bending the light around her, giving her the moniker of Invisible Woman. However, that is not the extent of her powers. Due to the cosmic radiations, Storm gets the power to make other objects and people partially or completely invisible too.
Her invisibility powers have made her one of the most powerful beings in the MCU, and she is widely believed to be the most powerful member of th Fantastic Four. While she is able to turn other things invisible, she also has the ability to see things that have already been rendered invisible and bring them back to visibility.
One of her most important powers is force-field generation. Sue Storm is able to generate powerful force fields that protect her or anything she chooses to include within its parameters. She is able to manipulate its strength and density, making it adjustable to whatever threat she faces. She can also change its form and state of matter.
Storm’s force field is also powerful against telekinetic and other psychic energies. In the comics, she is able to withstand attacks from Psi-Lord and Jean Grey. Storm also has combat experience and is trained in judo by her husband Reed Richards. She is also trained by She-Hulk and Iron Fist.
3. Ben Grimm a.k.a The Thing
Ebon Moss-Bachrach plays The Thing in The Fantastic Four: First Steps. In the trailer, he is shown in both his human form and his rock form, which he obtains after being exposed to cosmic radiation during the unplanned flight to space. The Thing is, as the trailer suggests, the rock of the group and is easily the strongest member physically.
Due to his appearance and rock formation, Grimm is extremely strong and can withstand high levels of pressure and attacks. His exterior is able to defend itself from bullets and other ammunition as well as heavier objects. His body, though penetrable, is practically a complete armor that protects him from the strongest attacks.
Due to his exterior, he also possesses other abilities like super strength, the ability to jump over huge heights, and better senses (except touch). He has better lung capacity, thus helping him retain his strength for longer periods. He is also practically immortal as he only ages when he is in human form (which happens rarely).
As Ben Grimm, he is also an excellent pilot and is probably one of the best on the planet. He has had military training and is also trained in a variety of combat and martial arts.
4. Johnny Storm a.k.a The Human Torch
While he proved his mettle as a performer in his works like Stranger Things, A Quiet Place: Day One, and Gladiator II, Joseph Quinn is about to tackle a whole new beast with The Fantastic Four: First Steps. The actor plays Johnny Storm, who becomes the Human Torch when he flames on. Fans already saw a return of this character in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Storm got the super cool power of flames and plasma after his exposure to cosmic radiation. He is able to manipulate not just the power he produces, but also any other source of flame that is in his vicinity. Johnny can activate a plasma aura around himself that can withstand attacks like bullets and other ammunition.
With his flame, he is often shown with the power of flight. He is also able to withstand any amount of flame sent to him. He can manipulate his powers to the most minute level and even has the control to channel them in only one direction. At his peak, the ‘nova flame’ is able to shoot out in all directions and release tremendous amounts of power.
However, he is not without his weaknesses as he requires a lot of oxygen to create his flame. Using the power also drains his energy and he needs time to recharge before going full throttle again. Traditional fire deterrents such as water and flame retardant foams are useful against him, in large quantities, of course.
