Taylor Sheridan crafts stories that unfold in a single hour of ruthless, unforgiving television. Case in point: 1923’s Season 2, Episode 2, titled “The Rapist is Winter,” is as cold as a frigid Montana night. This thrilling and visually evocative episode lingers long after it ends.
The second chapter of 1923‘s sophomore season continues the storylines of Whitfield’s (Timothy Dalton) vision for the Duttons’ land. While driving through snowy roads with Banner Creighton (Jerome Flynn), he spots men strangely gliding down the steep white powder hills.
When they approach, they are Norwegians, and Banner permits them to do what they call “skiing” down the hills. Whitfield asks several questions, including whether children can learn this. He continually tells Banner he needs vision, indicating he wants to make Yellowstone a family vacation spot.
Paramount+’s 1923 Season 2 Episode 2 Recap: Who is Zane Davis?
Zane Davis (Brian Geraghty) is a wagon boss of Jacob (Harrison Ford). Donald Whitfield’s men beat him because of his association with the Dutton family and, by proxy, for having a family and being married to Asami Ashikaga, an Indigenous woman. Zane has been charged with miscegenation. Jacob and the sheriff (Robert Patrick) approach a local judge for help.
The judge, Roy, has Zane’s wife and children in custody. Initially, the magistrate refuses to release them despite his hypocrisy—he is married to, in Jacob’s words, a “Crow woman” two states over. However, when threatened with arrest for possessing alcohol, Roy relents and signs an order releasing Zane and his family into Jacob’s custody.
Jacob takes Zane and his family back to the Yellowstone Ranch, but they are caught in a snowstorm before making it home. To protect themselves from the ice-cold winds and dropping temperatures, they flip the wagon for shelter. Meanwhile, Cara anxiously awaits her husband’s return.
Does Elizabeth Have Rabies?
Elizabeth (Landman’s Michelle Randolph) is attacked by a rabid wolf that breaks into a chicken coop looking for food. The beast bites her on the ankle before one of the Duttons’ ranch hands saves her, scaring off the predator. However, the wolf ominously watches the blonde beauty from a distance. Cara calls for the local doctor, who arrives with his nurse.
Cara insists that Elizabeth receive painful injections, despite Elizabeth’s objections that they don’t know for sure if the wolf was rabid. However, the danger lies in the fact that the disease is fatal once symptoms appear. Frustrated and distressed, the young woman declares, “This isn’t living. This is surviving.” She tells Cara she wants to move back east to her family.
The storm is so severe that the physician, Dr. Miller, and the nurse must stay the night. Cara (Helen Mirren) offers the nurse a place in her room, but the woman thanks her and sleeps on the couch instead. Later that night, Cara wakes up. She carefully grabs her shotgun and walks downstairs, searching for danger.
Who is U.S. Deputy Marshall Mamie Fossett?
Dexter’s Jennifer Carpenter plays U.S. Deputy Marshal Mamie Fossett, based on a real-life historical figure, one of the first women to serve as active U.S. Marshals in the United States. She is approached by U.S. Marshal Kent, his deputy, and Father Renaud, looking for Teonna. They tell her that the young woman stabbed several nuns and now is running with the renegades.
Kent is openly disrespectful of Fosssett and incredulous regarding a female with a badge. However, Fossett takes it in stride but is stern and blunt, saying this is her territory, and they will follow her rules. She also adds that Camanche respects respect. Indicating that Kent’s attitude will get his team killed sooner rather than later.
Later that night, while all three sit around a campfire, some young Indigenous men shoot Kent’s deputy with an arrow. They open fire, including the man of God, killing a few. They gather their things and move on, leaving the bodies for someone else to clean up. We have a feeling that it will be Fossett.
What Deal Does Spencer Make with Maceo?
Spencer (Brandon Sklenar) deals with Luca’s cousin, Maceo, and says that if they become bootleggers for one trip down to Fort Worth, Maceo will help Spencer return to his family. When they leave the ship, both are picked up by Maceo’s employees. As Luca walks into the backroom of a speakeasy, he says “Cugino!,” which means “Cousin” in Italian.
Maceo has one of his men take Spencer to eat, having Pizza for the first time. He then requests to send a telegraph at the hotel, where Maceo insists he stay the night and that he can see the sights of Hollywood. However, Spencer insists he needs to find the nearest train station. When Maceo’s enforcer, Angelo, tries to stop him, the lion hunter punches him several times, leaving him behind.
Later, Maceo’s men intercept him while walking to catch his train. They beat him up and take him back to their boss. Maceo says he cannot tolerate Spencer’s disrespect because it is contagious. Spencer explains that his family is in a war over their land, which Maceo understands. Since Spencer is a man with a cause, Maceo can trust him, he says, and then makes him an offer he cannot refuse.
Paramount+’s 1923 Season 2 Episode 2 Ending Explained: Was Cara Killed by the Rabid Wolf?
1923‘s second episode of the second season ends with Cara finding Dr. Miller’s nurse dead, having succumbed to wounds that appear to be from an animal attack. As Cara enters the main room, snow swirls around, giving the scene a stunning, ominous, dreamlike presentation.
However, she hears a growl from the shadows after finding the body. With the nurse’s blood on its face, the wolf approaches slowly. Cara draws her weapon, and the wolf attacks, but the screen cuts to a shot of the home. We hear the shotgun fired, and the blast briefly lights up the windows.
We will have to wait until next week to see if Cara survives.
