“My mother’s best friend was a local casting director here”: Ben Affleck’s First Acting Gig Was Due to Nepotism But He Has Since Outgrown That Label

Ben Affleck is a legendary name in Hollywood and one of the finest celebrities that the world has ever seen. His acting prowess in movies like The Accountant, his role as Batman, and his friendship with Matt Damon have become central to his personality.
Most of the veteran stars had a humble beginning. Although Affleck found worldwide fame through his acting skills, he didn’t exactly have a humble beginning. The actor did have some benefits of nepotism, which gave his career an initial push.
Ben Affleck got a ‘headstart’ in his acting career
The world has been engaged in the debate of nepotism in Hollywood for quite a long time. Some say that nepotism is bad, while others argue that if the actors are good, then there’s no harm in having a little headstart.
The world knows that Ben Affleck is a damn good actor and there’s no debate about it. In an earlier interview, the Gone Girl star revealed that he got a head start in his career by starring in a 1989 Burger King commercial.
During his talks with CBS News, Affleck revealed that his mother’s friend was a local casting director, and together they cast him in several small roles across various media projects.
My mother’s best friend was a local casting director here, and she and her partner actually cast me in a couple of little things when I was young. And the Burger King commercial was, like, a big failure, too!
He further continued,
I mean, how do you fail in a Burger King campaign? Oh horrible – it was humiliating.
As the years went on, Ben Affleck collaborated with his longtime childhood friend Matt Damon. Together, the duo wrote the screenplay for the 1997 film Good Will Hunting.
However, it was Affleck’s acting skills that inspired Matt Damon to also do something momentous in his career and take the difficult task head on. Affleck still remembers that day when they became friends.
Matt Damon lived two blocks away from Ben Affleck
A childhood friendship that turned into acting side-by-side is probably one of the most iconic things that has happened in Hollywood. The duo of Matt Damon and Ben Affleck still remains strong to this day.
So when Affleck starred in the Burger King commercial, it inspired Matt Damon to also seriously think about his career. In the CBS interview, the Justice League star talked about how he and Damon became friends.
Hard to say. He lived two blocks away from me. I had done a few acting gigs. He really was interested in being an actor. And, you know, we just had a good time. We became close and we’ve been close ever since.
The duo went on to write a screenplay for a film named Good Will Hunting, and they starred in it as well. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck made history in 1998 when the two became the youngest artists to win an Oscar for the Best Screenplay category.
Starring Robin Williams, Damon, and Ben Affleck, Good Will Hunting currently stands at a rating of 8.3/10 on IMDb and a whopping 97% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film is available to stream on Paramount+.
