Two and a Half Men Star Claims Veganism Nearly Killed Her: “I was a mess”

Famous for its risqué humor, Two and a Half Men immediately caught everyone’s attention when it premiered in 2003. With Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer leading the way as the Harper brothers, the show was destined to be a hit. Sheen played the womanizer Charlie Harper and had a string of romantic relationships to his name.

But while some made sense, others were just downright absurd. Perfectly fitting the latter was Courtney (his stepsister), played by actress Jenny McCarthy. Unlike others, she was a part of several episodes.

While she quickly became a fan favorite, in a recent interview the actress detailed a major health scare that could have been fatal.

Actress Jenny McCarthy opened up about her major health scare

Jenny McCarthy has played a number of roles in her career, but fans most fondly remember her as the seductive and sly Courtney from Two and a Half Men. Apart from this, she’s also quite vocal about her personal life and doesn’t hold back her opinions whether it be personal or professional. In the same manner, in an interview, she dived deeper into her struggle with veganism.

Not only this, but she also claimed that it nearly destroyed her life. During an appearance on the Heal Squad podcast with Maria Menounos, the actress shared that she once adopted a vegan diet thinking it would be a healthier lifestyle choice. But instead of making her feel better, it left her weaker than before. She said, “I tried vegan, and I almost died. I literally almost died.”

Apparently, she was constantly exhausted, and her body felt as if it was shutting down. At first she was not able to understand what exactly was happening, so she just assumed that she was bloated or sluggish.

But later she discovered that she actually had Celiac disease, a condition where the body cannot process gluten (a protein found in wheat, rye, and barley). On top of that, she was also allergic to soy, one of the most common staples in plant-based diets. She added:

I can’t have carbs and everything is a carb. I’m also, like,  allergic to soy and everything — I was literally dying. I was exhausted and fatigued. I was a mess.

So, this meant that most of the foods she was eating in her vegan diet were actually making her more sick. McCarthy was obviously desperate for a change, so she decided to try a carnivore diet, which consists almost entirely of meat. After which the difference in her health was undeniable.

While she doesn’t plan to stay on the meat-heavy diet forever, she did credit it with transforming her health.

Jon Cryer detailed how Charlie Sheen’s behavior changed in Two and a Half Men

Jon Cryer played Charlie Harper’s unlucky brother, Alan, and while they had a complex relationship on the sitcom, in reality the actors did share a good bond on set. In an interview via Entertainment Tonight, Cryer talked about the same and shared his experience of working with Charlie Sheen.

He said that in the beginning of the sitcom things were great, as Sheen was focused and naturally talented. But over time, as the show progressed, his life and career began to spiral out of control. In 2003, when the show premiered, Sheen was actually sober for two years and was fully dedicated to keeping it that way.

But things started changing, and Cryer noticed subtle shifts in his behavior, especially after his marriage with Denise Richards started to fall apart. At first he used to always be on time and had no issues with the writing or the jokes. However, after a while he started questioning the jokes, and Cryer couldn’t understand what was actually happening. Cryer said:

He started to have issues with the writing and sometimes issues with the writing that I didn’t understand. I would say, ‘This is the kind of joke you had no problem with a year and a half ago, and suddenly now it’s an issue?’ So, you know, it was very subtle. It took a while before it started really going off the rails.

As time went on, his behavior became even more unpredictable, and his controversial public statements began overshadowing the sitcom. But in 2011, his actions had reached a breaking point, and he was ultimately fired from the show after Season 8. Then Ashton Kutcher was brought in as his replacement, and the show continued till 2015.

While Sheen does regret what he said and did, Lorre and he are in a much better place now. But Cryer, on the other hand, admitted that it had been several years since he had actually communicated with Sheen.
