“Nearly every word is discussed”: Hidetaka Miyazaki’s Attention to Detail is So Intense It Made Pros Sweat Profusely, Says Elden Ring Voice Actor

We haven’t seen many game directors in the industry who are as respected and revered as Hidetaka Miyazaki, the legend behind Elden Ring and the Dark Souls series. Allegra Marland, the voice actor for Millicent, revealed in an interview back in May 2022 about how Miyazaki’s meticulous approach impacted her performance.
She shared how every word, nuance, and even specific sounds she made in her audition were referenced during recording sessions. The experience that she shared just shows us Miyazaki’s commitment to detail, and it’s a quality that we can see in every aspect of Elden Ring, and even its DLC. His relentless focus on even the smallest details impressed her and us.
Hidetaka Miyazaki’s attention to detail surprised a lot of people
Marland revealed in an interview Dan Allen Gaming that Miyazaki would reference specific elements of her audition during recording sessions. She revealed that he would note tiny vocal inflections and even recall particular sounds she made on specific letters.
This level of precision was a challenge for the team involved. The process involved 3 AM Zoom calls with Miyazaki’s team in Tokyo. The best part is that she isn’t the only one in the Elden Ring cast who has had an experience like this with Miyazaki.
Despite the intensity, Marland considered the experience a dream come true. She stated that she loved working with such a meticulous director and shared Miyazaki’s love for detailed work. Even when the sound engineers apologized for the painstaking process, she said that she was thrilled to be a part of it. It’s rare for a game director to be this involved in voice work, and if we can expect it from anyone, it’s Miyazaki.
This level of precision extends beyond voice acting and we see it in Elden Ring‘s world itself. Millicent, the character Marland portrays, is a tragic figure consumed by Scarlet Rot, a sickness that starts her entire journey. Her story is one that shows us suffering and fleeting hope and is the perfect example of Miyazaki and FromSoft’s storytelling.
Millicent is legitimately such a wonderful character. I will forever curse Miyazaki for not letting us have a good ending to her quest. pic.twitter.com/mzb8P13UL3

Miyazaki’s obsession with detail extends beyond voice acting. As president of FromSoftware since 2014, he has maintained a hands-on approach to game development. His games are punishing yet rewarding and we have been forced to embrace failure as a road to success.
We see Miyazaki’s vision in all of FromSoftware’s work

The level of dedication to his work is a philosophy that has shaped his entire career. Miyazaki has previously described himself as someone who has always seen the world as a harsh and unforgiving place. And this is something we see in all of his games. His stories do not offer easy victories, and his characters, like Millicent, often fight against fate only to meet tragic ends.
With over 25 million copies sold, Elden Ring has become a certified blockbuster in the gaming industry. Even within Elden Ring’s Shadow of the Erdtree DLC, we can still see Miyazaki’s influence. The DLC that came out last year pushes players even further with grotesque new enemies and brutal boss fights. But amidst the darkness, we still find moments of beauty.
Even after years of success, Miyazaki is still deeply involved in the creative process. For actors like Marland, working with Miyazaki is both a challenge and a privilege. The level of pressure is definitely high but it’s also an opportunity to be a part of a masterpiece where every aspect is treated with care.
