Masashi Kishimoto is a master at creating characters as well as the special bonds between them. While Naruto follows the typical Shonen stereotype of having an absent father, the few moments that he does get with his parent are enough to bring tears to anyone’s eyes.
But Naruto and Minato aren’t the only wholesome father-son duo in the series. There are plenty more wholesome parent-child combinations in the series. But unfortunately, the same cannot be said about Naruto‘s peer series, One Piece.
Eiichiro Oda might be a master at creating a spectacular world, but he is not the best at providing wholesome dads.
1. Might Guy and Might Duy, the ultimate ‘nice guy’ duo
Might Guy has one of the most awesome and supportive fathers in Naruto. Might Duy was an upbeat man who was always proud and overzealous. Duy always pushed Guy to be the best version of himself and lifted his spirits, something that Guy did for Rock Lee.
Might Duy ended up sacrificing his life for Guy, but without a single fear of his enemies. It was Duy who taught Guy how to use all Eight Gates.
2. Shikamaru and Shikaku Nara, the intelligent lot
At a time when no parent wanted their children to collude with Naruto, it was Shikaku who encouraged his son, Shikamaru, to do whatever he thought was best. He was always interested in his son’s development and training and even taught him some of the secret techniques of the Nara Clan.
He was extremely comfortable around his son and even talked about women with Shikamaru. He also cared greatly for his son and was empathetic every time Shikamaru felt distraught or frustrated.
3. Kakashi and Sakumo Hatake, the white-haired experts
Just like Kakashi, his father, Sakumo, was also a highly accomplished individual. He was known as Konoha’s White Fang. He was also a kind and loyal man who lost his wife when Kakashi was a mere child. He loved his son dearly, and because of his humble nature, Kakashi greatly idolized him.
Sakumo was more committed to his allies, comrades, and loved ones to the point that he would even abandon a mission to save their lives. But this led to the public vilifying him. Being a kind man, he could not take the humiliation.
4. Choji and Choza Akimichi, the gentle but voracious duo
Choza Akemichi is the 15th head of the Akimichi clan and also the former teammate of Shikaku Nara. He is a caring man with a gentle nature. He also possessed a great understanding of the world, and his love for his son, Choji, was visible.
But when Choji’s actions put others in danger, Chozo was always the first to reprimand him. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Chozo told Choji to stop acting cowardly and to take everything around him seriously. Both father and son share the common trait of a large appetite.
One Piece father-and-son duos can’t hold a candle to Naruto
While the father-and-son duos in Naruto are heartfelt and touching, the same cannot be said about One Piece. Masashi Kishimoto has created dads who are role models, and their children can look up to them like icons. They are kind and caring towards their children and lead them to the right path.
However, the same cannot be said about Eiichiro Oda. Oda creates father figures who seem more like pariahs and oppressors. Monkey D. Dragon might be a great revolutionary, but he has never even met his son, Luffy. Usopp’s father, Yasopp, left his son and wife to fulfill his own desires. Vinsmoke Judge turned his children into weapons of mass destruction. When Sanji turned out to be a normal and empathetic human being, Judge called him a massive failure.
While there might be a few exceptions like King Neptune, there are too many bad examples. Instead, One Piece focuses more on the found family tropes like Chopper and Dr. Hiriluk, Ace and Whitebeard, Sanji and Zeff, or the shipwright Tom and his disciples.
One Piece and Naruto are available to read on Viz Media, and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
