Getting Almost Naked at Oscars Was Not John Cena’s Idea but He Did Get Buried Because of It Ahead of Wrestlemania 41

Brace yourselves because WrestleMania 41 is almost here, and we will finally get to see the hyped John Cena-Cody Rhodes rivalry reach its conclusion. Will the former manage to snag his 17th world championship title, or will his final WrestleMania before retirement end with a loss? Only time will tell. As we step closer and closer to the main event, the feud only escalates in size, and now, it looks like Cody Rhodes is spitting John Cena’s words right back at him.

Remember when John Cena called his opponent an errand boy on Monday Night RAW? Well, Cody Rhodes just turned the tables on him during the final confrontation between the two wrestlers. Not only did he come for John Cena’s physical attributes, but he also took a hit at his role in Hollywood.

Cody Rhodes didn’t hold back at WWE SmackDown

While we all know that John Cena‘s microphone game is undefeated, Cody Rhodes certainly took the cake at WWE SmackDown, just a hours before their final battle in WrestleMania 41.

During the verbal bullying, Rhodes talked about how things have changed at WWE over the past few years, ever since Cena lost his charm and apparently became old news. In his words, “Since the GOAT hasn’t shown up since Elimination Chamber, allow me to offer you a little perspective, okay? You called me underwhelming. Guess what? You’re overrated.”

While spewing venom in his opponent’s face, Rhodes went on and on, berating Cena’s physical features. From comparing his face to “melting wax” to calling him “paler than Sting at Starrcade,” it is safe to say that Rhodes came prepared.

However, the real low blow came when he brought up the time Cena walked onto the Oscars stage in 2024, naked from head to toe. Rhodes said, “…the whole world watched you saunter on the Oscar stage, butt-a*s naked for the people you run errands for now.”

Check it out:

This came after Cena called him a “common fan” and an “errand boy who got lucky” among other things during Monday Night RAW. It looks like life really does come full circle, huh?

John Cena opens up about the Oscars stunt

When we sat down to watch the 2024 Oscars, a naked Cena was certainly not on our roster. The man was presenting the Best Costume Design award while being criminally underdressed himself. Completely nude on stage with nothing but an envelope with the winner’s name hiding his goods, Cena stated, “Costumes are…so important. Maybe the most important thing there is.”

If he was trying to make a point, we sure understood it.

Later, Cena appeared on the Club Shay Shay talk show, where he looked back on the little stunt he pulled off at the Oscars. While the idea may have seemed hilarious back then, he sure feels a tad bit embarrassed by it all. After all, he was naked in a crowd of well-dressed A-listers who are role models to some.

Cena recalled,

I have the most decorated performers, producers, directors in one room and I’m gonna go out there with my balls in the wind, with an index card covering my stuff like, ‘Hey guys, is this funny? Are we good?’ I got all the people behind the camera, but then I walk out in front of a room of my peers, many of which I’ve never met because I haven’t worked my way up to meet [them].

As for how the skit came to be, Cena revealed that it all began when Jimmy Kimmel, the ceremony’s host, asked him to make a cameo. Kimmel explained the bit to him before the Oscars, and Cena was game almost immediately. He recalled,

Jimmy Kimmel called me personally and was like, ‘I need you to come to the Oscars.’ And he’s like, ‘Just let me send you the bit.’ And he sent it on paper and I called him back, like, ‘When do you need me there?’

Luckily, the team was kind enough to use nude tape on the wrestler/actor. However, little did he know that this decision would come back to bite him just before the biggest match of his career.

WrestleMania 41 is scheduled on Saturday, April 19, and Sunday, April 20, 2025, at 7 PM (ET)/4 PM (PT), streaming live on Peacock in the United States and on Netflix everywhere else.
