“It’s never been too dramatic”: Blake Lively’s Brutal Comment After Penn Badgley Breakup Is a Stark Contrast to His Sweet Words

There have been more than just a few instances in Hollywood’s entertainment industry where onscreen ships developed into offscreen real-time chemistry between the respective actors as well. While some of them go a long way, others are unable to sustain themselves and eventually sink. Blake Lively and Penn Badgley’s relationship was yet another addition to that list of many.

For one that started on the sets of the show, they both continue to be thoroughly acknowledged for — i.e., Gossip Girl — the real-life portrayers of Dan and Serena were widely shipped by fans worldwide. But their relationship couldn’t last for too long, and while Badgley initially had nothing short of sweet words for her, Lively’s comments stood as a stark contrast to them.

Starting from the first season of Gossip Girl, Blake Lively’s Serena van der Woodsen and Badgley’s Dan Humphrey were shown to be each other’s love interests. Their relationship on screen was pretty long-lasting as well, as it eventually resulted in their marriage in the last season of the teen drama. But the same wasn’t the case with their offscreen relationship.

In a relationship mostly kept private, Lively and Penn Badgley started dating in real life soon after their casting as each other’s love interest on the fan-favorite CW series in 2007. But the offscreen lovers ended up splitting way before the show’s 2012 finale, with Us Weekly confirming in October 2010 that the two had parted their respective ways after three years together.

Following this, what the Green Lantern actress had to say a few months after their split came as a surprise to quite a few fans, especially those who had been shipping the two together the same way as they had been doing with their characters. In an interview for a Glamour magazine issue in 2011, she shared her take on breakups, saying (via SD Entertainer Magazine):

Every relationship you have, you’re learning and growing and taking something from that. So for me, it’s never been too dramatic of a thing when something ends.

Judging from her words, it sounds like the 3-year-long affinity didn’t mean all that much to Lively, currently married with 4 children to Ryan Reynolds, considering how little it seems to have affected her. But her ex-partner, who is married with one child to Domino Kirke, on the other hand, had nothing short of sweet words to say about the actress soon after their split.

Penn Badgley, on the other hand, had sweet things to say after their split

While Blake Lively’s comments in late 2011 about breakups must have inevitably stung, Dan Humphrey’s portrayer, Penn Badgley, still had nice things to say about Lively, even after finding out about her wedding to Reynolds in 2012, almost two years after they parted ways. In a reported interview with Us Weekly in September 2012, the You star candidly confessed:

[People] were like, ‘Hey, did you hear that Blake’s getting married?’ I was like, ‘OK, great!’ Obviously people are going to try to connect us in ways in which we’re not connected anymore. But it’s great. I’m happy for her.

Needless to say, Penn Badgley’s comments say a lot about the light in which he personally holds his relationships, or at least about how he held his relationship with Blake Lively. And Lively’s comments, too, of course, say a lot about her take as well, though it isn’t all that surprising, at this point, after witnessing all the other controversies she is drawn in.
