Julius, No You CAN’T Do That: How Did We Miss Yuki Tabata Sneaking in an Elon Musk Salute Scene in Black Clover

In January 2025, Elon Musk took the world by storm with a controversial salute. No one has really gotten over it yet, and now, months later, even Black Clover is embroiled in it somehow. No, don’t worry, Yuki Tabata isn’t a Musk salute supporter, but one scene with Julius, the Wizard King, is making fans question their own eyes.
The scene emerged from a screenshot taken at an inappropriate timing, and when taken out of context, the image looks controversial. But when one takes a look at the episode in which the scene occurs, all issues can be easily solved.
After all, an episode that aired years before the Musk salute can’t possibly be an imitation of it. And with Black Clover being a light-hearted Shonen anime, there are no possibilities of any other sinister intentions.
Did Black Clover‘s Julius do an Elon Musk salute?
Episode 70 of Black Clover featured the Star Awards Festival, in which Wizard King Julius announced the top-performing squads of the Clover Kingdom. While addressing his citizens, the Wizard King made a gesture that might seem similar to that of Elon Musk’s salute.
However, the scene makes Julius look like he is doing a salute when he is simply addressing the citizens of the Clover Kingdom and trying to attract their attention toward his announcements. Additionally, his hand was extended because he was trying to use magic to pull up the major disclosures and achievements of the magic knights and squads. It is almost like a magic PowerPoint presentation.
But in order to do so, Julius had to extend his hand, just like most mages do when using a lot of magic spells. When it is taken out of context, it might seem like the Wizard King is doing a controversial salute. Fortunately, the reality is quite different, and this is exactly why one shouldn’t stop anime midway through and take random screenshots!
Yuki Tabata simply wanted to give fans a fun-filled episode
Episode 70 of Black Clover was one of the most light-hearted ones in the series. After a major conflict with the Eye of the Midnight Sun, it was time to declare the strongest magic squads. King Julius made sure that the Star Awards Festival would cheer up citizens despite the recent attacks.
The episode showed that the Golden Dawn squad had placed on the top spot (with 125 points) once again. The crowd was filled with fans of William Vangeance and the Golden Dawn team. But the most unexpected development was when Julius announced the Black Bulls to be in second place with 101 points. This was especially surprising considering the fact that they had made a new record with negative 50 points last year.
Next, Asta and Yuno were summoned as the top-performing newbies of the two teams. They held a power display for the commoners who doubted their abilities. Julius was delighted at everything that happened at the festival and made proud dad faces at his beloved magic knights. Truly, it was a funny episode without any political inclinations.
Black Clover anime is available to read on Viz Media and the anime is currently streaming on Crunchyroll.
