Grim Theory About Yami Makes Him Black Clover’s Saddest Taicho

Yami is one of the best and most hilarious characters of Black Clover. He is the perfect squad captain, a true friend, and someone who always stands by his comrades. At the same time, he has the most tragic backstory, which is probably why he is so empathetic towards others.

On the surface, Yami might look like a chill guy with no worries in the world. But his inner trauma is anything but relaxing. Yami’s gold heart is a result of how he shaped himself despite his brutal childhood, and the effects of it still haunt him.

Yami’s past in Black Clover is heart-wrenching

[Spoilers]

Yami has always been a protective individual, and this is true even when he was a child. He was born in Hino Country, an island located far away from the major kingdoms. Yami was born to an abusive father. He believed that Sukehiro had the potential to be the strongest. Yami learnt to be a magic swordsman from his father, but had to defend his sister from him from an early age.

Yami’s father was a drunk, and in his drunken stupor, he would act violently towards his children. Thus, Yami was the only one who could save his sister from the same violence that he had always had to endure. But Yami’s story isn’t that of a kid who outgrew his trauma and dumped his abuser. Instead, he had to go through the most horrendous events.

When Yami turned 13, his father became increasingly dissatisfied with their clan and their peaceful state. Thus, he wanted to give Yami a drug that would induce a bloodthirsty state in him and draw out all of his latent powers. However, since Yami’s sister, Ichika, meddled in his plans, he fed it to her instead. What followed was a night of rampage as she slaughtered the Yami clan except for her brother. Yami decided that the best way to protect his little sister would be to take the blame on his own head and flee the country.

The most melancholic Yami theory

Yami might not grow a beard because it would remind him of his father | Credits: Viz Media, Shueisha

Yami is seen clean-shaven most of the time and has never grown a beard past an occasional short stubble. But why is Yami so meticulous about his beard all the time, despite not caring how the rest of him looks? The man wears a white, sleeveless t-shirt most of the time.

One theory is that Yami does not like growing a beard because it would remind him of his father. Yami looks quite similar to his father, and having a beard would make him look too similar to the same guy who abused him and his sister throughout their childhoods. Thus, Yami might take special precautions to never look like his father, even if it’s accidentally.

Yami has worked too hard for too long to be reminded of his past experiences. Of course, the trauma lives within him, as is common for any abused child. But Yami has shown a conscious effort in being a better person. He adores his found family, consisting of the Black Bulls, and is an overall great mentor. Even the other captains, such as Nozel Silva, have traumatizing backgrounds, but Yami’s backstory is simply too tragic.
