Tom Cruise Has Less Than 500 Words in Silent Movie on World War 2: Christopher McQuarrie Is Truly Pushing Tom Beyond His Limits

As Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning proves to be an unforgettable theater experience, Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie are already planning what’s coming next. After playing the IMF agent we have come to adore, he is returning to the war genre, but this time with almost no dialogue!

There is no denying that this actor-director duo is capable of wonders, but what comes next might be something we have never seen Tom Cruise do. In a world where monologues are all the rage, it looks like the actor will be embracing the idea that actions speak louder than words in his next movie with Christopher McQuarrie!

There have been reports about Christopher McQuarrie directing a movie that revolves around an “S.O.E. operation and a marine captain who crashes in France and becomes the sole survivor. Against all odds, he must complete his mission amidst the chaos of war” (via JoBlo).

Along with Tom Cruise, the movie is reported to have Henry Cavill and Marion Cotillard as well. While we don’t know much about what the movie looks like, McQuarrie recently spoke about it with Happy Sad Confused‘s host, Josh Horowitz.

He talked about the evolution of the Mission: Impossible franchise from Rogue Nation to Fallout and finally, to The Final Reckoning. Accumulating everything he has learned so far thanks to these movies, the filmmaker is looking forward to making his silent movies.

McQuarrie stated,

…What I’m most proud of in this movie are the scenes in which they aren’t expositions. It’s composition and behavior. That is the evolution of Rogue into Fallout into Dead Reckoning into this movie. I’m just excited to now take everything I’ve learned from the franchise, unburdened by everything you must put in this franchise, to go make my silent movie.

It’ll definitely be interesting to see how McQuarrie pulls this one off, especially now that Cruise is attached to it!

Tom Cruise will speak no more than 500 words in the movie

When asked if he and Cruise have discussed doing an actual silent movie with little to no dialogue, McQuarrie admitted that he had brought a script to the actor before, and now he is finally attached to it. Confirming that the movie in question is in fact Broadsword, he stated that Cruise’s character has less than 500 words worth of dialogue throughout the runtime.

As for the character, Cruise will be playing a fairly stoic man who completely relies on action and behavior to put his point across. Moreover, the character that Cruise will be paired with in the movie will have even fewer lines than him.

McQ stated,

I brought to Tom at the start of this process. It was the movie I was going to go off and do before we did this and now Tom’s attached to it. He has fewer than 500 words wowrds in the whole movie. He’s a fairly stoic character. It’s all doen through action, behavior…And the character with whom he has partnered in the movie has fewer words than he does.

As for what Cruise’s fans can expect in the future, McQuarrie talked about bringing back Les Grossman from Tropic Thunder, one of the most controversial cult-classics of all time. Cruise had a hilarious cameo in the movie, and since then, fans have been hoping to see more of Grossman. It looks like their wishes will soon come true.

McQuarrie stated that there are serious conversations going on about bringing the character back. Moreover, the team has already “cracked” Top Gun 3 as the filmmaker made it clear that “it’s already in the bag.”

As Cruise and McQuarrie continue redefining cinematic boundaries, consider us seated for whatever they have to offer. Whether it’s a near-silent war film or the return of Les Grossman, this duo isn’t showing any signs of slowing down, and we love them for this.

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning is currently in theaters.
