In the realm of science fiction, very few stories seem to capture the raw essence of human resilience and existential dread as profoundly as The Eternaut. An Argentine television miniseries based on a comic of the same name, it was released recently on Netflix on April 30, 2025.
Within days of its release, the series was renewed for a second season. It’s a tale of survival, amidst an apocalyptic snowfall and an alien invasion in Buenos Aires, that resonates with universal themes of resistance, sacrifice, and the indomitable human spirit. Its release on Netflix’s streaming platform has further helped bring this iconic story to a global audience, modernizing its setting while preserving its emotional and philosophical core.
While the first season gripped viewers with its chilling visuals and compelling performances, it ended on a massive cliffhanger steeped in time-travel revelations and unresolved mysteries. Now that the streaming giant has confirmed the show for another season, fans are clamoring for more, wondering what mysteries will unfold in the upcoming season. While details are scarce, there is still some inkling as to what the next season will be about.
So, without any further delay, let’s explore what we know about The Eternaut Season 2, from its anticipated release to expected plot developments, cast details, and more.
What is The Eternaut about?
Before we dive head-first into Season 2 of The Eternaut, let’s take a moment to know what the series is all about for those of us who have yet to see this groundbreaking series.
The Eternaut is a landmark Argentine science fiction story. It was originally a graphic novel by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, first published in 1957. While plans to adapt the novel have been in the works for decades, the series was only recently able to move forward. After spending over six years in development and production, it was finally released this year on Netflix.
As for the plot, the story follows Juan Salvo, an ordinary, common man thrust into an extraordinary crisis when a mysterious, toxic snowfall blankets the city of Buenos Aires, killing millions. As survivors band together, they uncover an alien invasion orchestrated by a shadowy force called the Hand, which deploys grotesque creatures and brainwashed humans to subjugate the planet.
Juan, along with his ex-wife Elena, daughter Clara, and friends like Alfredo, is now forced to lead a resistance against this deadly existential threat. The narrative explores themes of resilience, sacrifice, and collective heroism against a backdrop of societal collapse.
How did The Eternaut Season 1 end?
We cannot talk about the plot of the upcoming Season 2 of The Eternaut without knowing how the season of the series ended. If you haven’t seen the series, we suggest you stop reading now. But if you have already seen it, here is a little reminder about the cliffhanger ending of The Eternaut season one.
After surviving the deadly snowfall and battling alien forces in the city of Buenos Aires, Juan Salvo and his group of survivors uncover the invasion’s deadly mastermind, the enigmatic Hand, as we know from the graphic novel series. The finale sees Juan grappling with mysterious visions suggesting that he has perhaps been caught in a time loop. This revelation redefines his entire mission to save his daughter, Clara, and ex-wife, Elena.
Meanwhile, Clara, who was initially lost but mysteriously ended up coming back to Favalli’s home, is found at the alien-controlled Campo de Mayo army base. This suggests that she is being controlled by the aliens and might have a greater hand in the narrative than we presumed. As for the survivors, they face betrayal and mounting odds as the Hand’s forces tighten their grip.
The season ends with Juan experiencing a vision of a cryptic future battle and a glimpse of his own role as a ‘time-traveling Eternaut,’ realizing that he has already lived through everything that is going on in the world. Now, given the monumental task of altering history to save the whole of humanity, Juan must prepare for battle alone, unable to trust anyone, given the alien’s mind-controlling scheme.
What will The Eternaut Season 2 be about?
Just days after the whole of Season 1 of The Eternaut was released on Netflix, the streaming giant renewed the miniseries for a second season. Having broken into Netflix’s top 10 within days of its release, Netflix’s Latin American programming boss, Francisco ‘Paco’ Ramos, revealed to Deadline that the upcoming season is going to
explore many of the sci-fi concepts that were just pointed out in Season 1, and they are going to be fully blown.
Meanwhile, Producer Matías Mosteirin from K&S Productions stated to the publication that the plan is to end the tale in the second season, with eight or so episodes. Moreover, given the time-traveling narrative in the finale, we expect the series to adapt from the second volume of Oesterheld’s graphic novel, El Eternauta: Segunda Parte, published in 1975.
The upcoming season, which is expected to be the final one as well, will likely focus on several key plotlines, tying up loose ends for a definitive conclusion. While we expect to see more of Juan’s time-traveling abilities, the show will likely explore more about the Hand, its army of brainwashed humans, and the survivors at Campo de Mayo, including Clara, Elena, and Ana. With two more episodes than the first season, the upcoming second and final season aims to conclude the story, wrapping up Juan’s journey while honoring the graphic novel’s legacy.
Cast and crew of The Eternaut Season 2
Created and directed by Bruno Stagnaro, he will return for the second season of the show. Produced by Netflix and K&S Films, The Eternaut Season 2 will bring back several of the key cast members, depending on their survival.
Ricardo Darín will reprise his role as Juan Salvo, the everyman-turned-hero whose empathetic performance anchored the series. Also reprising their roles would be Carla Peterson as Elena, Juan’s ex-wife; César Troncoso as Alfredo Favalli, his steadfast friend; Andrea Pietra as Ana, Favalli’s wife; and Mora Fiszbajn as Clara, Juan and Elena’s daughter.
Ariel Staltari, who plays Omar—an original character created for the series—and co-wrote the script, is also expected to return. Moreover, new characters could potentially be introduced, though no casting announcements have been made as of May 2025. While we await more casting updates, the grounded performance from such an ensemble cast will continue to be the cornerstone of The Eternaut.
The Eternaut Season 2: Production and release date
While the production details of The Eternaut Season 2 have not been revealed, it is expected that it will continue to leverage Buenos Aires as a living backdrop, with 50 real locations and 35 virtual sets used in Season 1 to recreate the apocalyptic atmosphere (via Variety). The score, composed by Federico Jusid, will likely return, complemented by Argentine songs that grounded Season 1 in its cultural context, such as tracks by Manal, Soda Stereo, Carlos Gardel, and Mercedes Sosa.
One of Latin America’s most ambitious TV projects to date, the release date for the second season has not yet been revealed. Given the long production schedule of the first season and the extensive use of CGI, we can expect the series to drop in late 2026 or possibly early 2027. But whenever it may release, one cannot deny that The Eternaut stands as a testament to the enduring power of stories that challenge us to confront the unknown, both in the world and within ourselves.
The Eternaut Season 1 is available to stream on Netflix in the US.
