WWE’s Chief Content Officer, Triple H, is achieving big numbers for the company. The former 14-time world champion recently said that he doesn’t see WWE as a sport. Following up, however, ‘The Game’ revealed his own definition of what the essence of the Stamford-based promotion is.
Triple H recently made an appearance on the Nightcap with Unc & Ocho podcast. Defining what he thinks WWE is, ‘The King of Kings’ noted that it is beyond the athleticism shown by the wrestlers, their stats, and their championship belts.
Speaking about the great legends of the company, like Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Ric Flair, and others, he said that fans are hooked to the emotion they attach to these stars. He said that the storyline their characters portray is what people actually look for when they watch wrestling.
That is what we do, right? I say this a lot of times when people don’t understand—like if we’re talking to network executives, they’re trying to figure out what we are… I say we are less boxing and more Rocky, right? We’re not the sport—we’re a movie about the sport.
This is true since, while WWE provides a live experience to its fans, what they see has been choreographed and built to create an impact, both emotional and visceral. Triple H, especially, has been lauded for his long-term storytelling and how he builds entire arcs over the years and meshes them together.
This was seen at WrestleMania XL, where Roman Reigns collided against and lost to the duo of Seth Rollins and Cody Rhodes. This marked the end of his 1,316-day run as the Undisputed Champion. ‘The American Nightmare’ also finished his story to become the first member of the Rhodes family to become a WWE world champion.
Triple H Explains Why the WWE Universe Keeps Coming Back for More
Speaking further on the matter during the same interview, Triple H emphasized what keeps the fans returning to WWE. He highlighted that people seldom rewatch old Super Bowl matches unless they’re trying to study the technicalities of the sport. On the other hand, however, the storytelling aspect of the shows put up by WWE makes people rewatch iconic moments for years.
Very few people, unless you’re an incredible student of the technical aspects of it, go back and watch a Super Bowl from five years ago. People still go back and watch WrestleMania 3 to this day.
Fans are often seen flocking to the comments section of the videos uploaded on WWE’s YouTube channel years after the upload of a clip. This includes iconic comebacks, unexpected betrayals and alliances, and the underdogs defeating giants in big matches.
Instead of just using their fists, wrestlers also traverse big chunks of their journeys to the top via the mic. Thus, when they finally get down to trading blows with their opponent, the audience doesn’t cheer for the obvious winner, but for the wrestler whom they want to see win.
WWE Isn’t Just Limited to the Ring
While every sport is typically limited to its stadium, the same isn’t true for pro wrestling. Several brawls, promos, and segments take place outside the ring and the designated arenas.
On March 9, 2009, Triple H reached Randy Orton’s residence with a sledgehammer to attack him, throwing him out of the house. Dominik Mysterio was arrested outside his grandparents’ house on December 25, 2022, after putting his hands on his father, Rey Mysterio.
Rivals don’t just invade each other’s physical spaces, but each other’s mental and emotional spaces as well. This was seen last year when CM Punk and Drew McIntyre were at each other’s throats in a red-hot feud. While neither star was fighting for a championship belt, McIntyre had stolen a fan-made bracelet from Punk that carried the names of his wife, AJ Lee, and his dog, Larry.

The result? ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ and ‘The Second City Saint’ viciously traded blows across the 2024 SummerSlam, Bash in Berlin, and Bad Blood. Eventually, CM Punk lost the bracelet, which was eventually destroyed by the Scotsman. However, he managed to win the feud by 2-1, while also denying McIntyre several chances to win the World Heavyweight Championship.
At the same time, ahead of the 2024 Bad Blood, Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns forged a temporary alliance to take on Solo Sikoa and Jacob Fatu in the football stadium of Georgia Tech.
