James Gunn Fires Back at Hardcore Fans Over Batman Confusion in His DC Universe: “They’re in our bubble”
You have got to hand it to James Gunn. The DCU co-head knows what he’s doing. With some confusion regarding two Batmans (the DCU and the Reevesverse’s version), James Gunn clarified that he wasn’t worried about it in the least.
In fact, during his talk with Brandon Davis (via The Morning After Pod), Gunn revealed that some hardcore DCU fans were so involved with themselves that they believed that everyone else was “too stupid to understand nuance”.
Normies will never understand this. Casuals will never understand this. The truth is, guys… you are the ones that don’t understand. The casuals always understand.
He continued,
But the people who really focus on this stuff, they’re in our bubble. And the people in our bubble think that everyone outside that bubble is too stupid to understand nuance and it is just totally not the case.
Gunn’s words rang true for many of the DCU fans who had only seen Superman and had no prior idea about the comics and/or the history of these characters, because it simply wasn’t necessary.
James Gunn Called Out Hardcore DCU Fans for Being Toxic
Fandoms can often become toxic, especially when the projects are based on much-revered source material, like comic books, novels, or video games.
James Gunn called out the so-called hardcore DCU fans who may have read the comic books and claimed that people outside the bubble of comic books were still cinemaphiles and understood what was going on.
Part of the reason why Gunn’s movies are so successful is that he creates a complete story in itself with no necessity to finish a comic book to figure out the why, how, or what of the story.
On the contrary, Matt Reeves created Robert Pattinson’s Batman and introduced him to the world as if they were already aware of this vigilante. Although Paul Dano’s casting as the Riddler was indeed iconic, the story wasn’t completely fulfilling; rather, there were some questions that remained unanswered. Naturally, Gunn isn’t even bothered about the Reevesverse.
James Gunn Isn’t Bothered by the Reevesverse Batman
On the contrary, James Gunn is rather supporting Matt Reeves’ endeavour to create his own cinematic universe centred around a living, breathing Gotham City. With The Batman, The Penguin, and the development of The Batman 2, Reeves isn’t planning on slowing down, and James Gunn doesn’t seem to mind either.
The director stated in the interview that he was confident that people would understand the basic difference between Reeves’ version of The Batman and the DCU’s Batman. Despite both going through different stories and villains, fans will surely enjoy both versions of Batman since the directors are so visually distinct and different in their creative take on the character.
As for the character itself, James Gunn hasn’t cast an actor yet for DCU’s Batman, while Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 is in its development stage with a finished script already on the table.
