Arrakis vs. The Avengers seems to be fast-approaching as Warner Bros. refuses to budge from their decision to release Dune 3 on December 18, 2026, the same day Robert Downey Jr’s Avengers: Doomsday is dropping.
🚨WARNER BROS ISN'T BLINKING: DUNE 3 WILL GO HEAD-TO-HEAD WITH AVENGERS ON THE SAME DAY

Get ready for "Dunesday."
Warner Bros. and Legendary have no plans to move Dune: Part Three from its December 18, 2026 release date, even though Marvel just announced Avengers: Doomsday for… pic.twitter.com/MXwKxBsF4p
The studio seems to be extremely confident in its product, so much so that WB is willing to risk Dune: Part Three‘s box office performance by pitting it against one of the most anticipated movies right now, if not the most.
Yes, there has been a decline in interest when it comes to superhero movies as a whole, but with both Robert Downey Jr and Chris Evans finally returning to the MCU, we expect Doomsday to shatter Marvel’s previous records.
Dune is, undoubtedly, one of the finer franchises to have graced theaters recently, but is Timothée Chalamet‘s charm and Denis Villeneuve‘s direction enough for Dune 3 to go up against Doomsday and emerge victorious?
While only time will tell the results, moviegoers should brace themselves for a Barbenheimer-type event. “Dunesday” is coming.
Comparing The Avengers and Dune‘s Box Office History

The Dune movies have had an impressive box office performance, but it is no surprise that the scales tip in the Avengers‘ favor. The first official team-up of our MCU heroes alone made $1.5 billion at the worldwide box office, more than the combined earnings of Villeneuve’s two titles.
Here’s a quick summary of how much the four Avengers movies have made so far (via The Numbers):
| TITLE | PRODUCTION BUDGET | BOX OFFICE |
| The Avengers (2012) | $225,000,000 | $1,515,100,211 |
| Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015) | $365,000,000 | $1,395,316,979 |
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) |
$300,000,000 | $2,048,158,241 |
| Avengers: Endgame (2019) | $400,000,000 | $2,717,503,922 |
| TOTAL | $1,290,000,000 | $7,676,079,353 |
And here’s how much the Dune movies have made (via The Numbers):
| TITLE | PRODUCTION BUDGET | BOX OFFICE |
| Dune | $45,000,000 | $429,550,066 |
| Dune: Part Two | $165,000,000 | $715,206,195 |
| TOTAL | $210,000,000 | $1,144,756,261 |
Both franchises have only seen a rise in their box office performances, with the exception of Age of Ultron. Perhaps Dune 3 might be able to cross a billion dollars this time, but will it be enough to beat Doomsday in the race?
Dune Director Criticizes Robert Downey Jr’s Superhero Universe
Perhaps Villeneuve is not afraid of what Doomsday could do because of what he truly thinks of superhero movies. We all remember Martin Scorsese’s criticism of the genre, and as it turns out, the Dune director feels the same way.
In an interview with El Mundo, Villeneuve resonated with Scorsese’s thoughts, calling out Marvel movies for overdoing the “cut and paste” formula.
He stated,
Perhaps the problem is that we are in front of too many Marvel movies that are nothing more than a ‘cut and paste’ of others. Perhaps these types of movies have turned us into zombies a bit … But big and expensive movies of great value there are many today. I don’t feel capable of being pessimistic at all.
Say what you may, Marvel has certainly cracked the code when it comes to breaking records at the box office, all while delivering quality content. Yes, not every project is a hit, but more often than not, the audience enjoys what the MCU puts forward. As for the box office, Dune may not be a franchise for everyone, whereas Marvel appeals to nearly every demographic imaginable.
