“Ruined WWE and now to ruin a Christopher Nolan movie”: Why Fans Hate Travis Scott’s Casting in The Odyssey

A new TV spot for Christopher Nolan‘s The Odyssey showed the first glimpse of Travis Scott in the epic film. Fans were unaware of the musician’s involvement. The brief teaser showed him commanding a group of soldiers, which included Tom Holland’s Telemachus and Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus.
This isn’t the singer’s first movie appearance. Scott previously appeared in a minor role in the 2019 movie, Gully, and played himself in the film adaptation of his album Utopia, titled Circus Maximus. He also played a role in 2023’s experimental film, Aggro Dr1ft. However, fans weren’t particularly happy to see him in the trailer of The Odyssey.

One fan particularly noted Scott’s appearance in the main event of WrestleMania 41. WWE fans expected The Rock to make an appearance during the match between John Cena and Cody Rhodes. However, Scott appeared instead, giving us one of the most forgettable moments from WrestleMania in recent years.
Fans feared that his appearance would ruin Nolan’s film as well. His past reputation, including arrests for getting into fights, also caused some fans to hate his casting in the movie. He also received backlash for the death of at least ten fans in a crowd crush during his performance at the Astroworld Festival in 2021. Some of the comments read:

Travis Scott’s Potential Role in The Odyssey
In the trailer for The Odyssey, Travis Scott’s character silenced a mess hall where troops, including Jon Bernthal’s Menelaus and Tom Holland’s Telemachus, were seated. He is seen standing atop a table, warning his forces of the impending war.
He can be seen saying the trailer, “A war, a man, a trick — a trick to break the walls of Troy.” The trailer then cuts to images of the great Trojan War. Scott’s character continues, “It’s burning, screaming to the ground.” Fans will have to wait for confirmation on which role Scott is playing in the movie.
While this is a major movie role for Scott, he has previously shared his passion for movies. During an interview for Rolling Stone, he talked about the importance of the theatre-going experience for movies.
Nolan’s movie, based on Homer’s epic, features an ensemble cast led by Matt Damon. The movie also stars Zendaya, Anne Hathaway, Lupita Nyong’o, Robert Pattinson, Benny Safdie, Charlize Theron, Himesh Patel, Elliott Page, Bill Irwin, and Samantha Morton.
In the movie, Damon’s Odysseus has to undertake a dangerous journey home after the Trojan War. He has to face off against mythological giants like the Cyclops, Sirens, Calypso, and the witch goddess Circe.
Travis Scott and Christopher Nolan Collaborated in Tenet

Travis Scott has previously worked on a Christopher Nolan movie, just not as an actor. He provided the theme song, The Plan, for Nolan’s Tenet. During an interview with GQ, Nolan shared that Scott’s music was the final piece of the musical puzzle that he and Ludwig Göransson created for the movie. He shared:
His voice became the final piece of a yearlong puzzle. His insights into the musical and narrative mechanism [composer] Ludwig Göransson and I were building were immediate, insightful, and profound.
During a Q&A session, Nolan spoke about Scott’s role in his movie Tenet. He answered why he chose to work with the musician in the movie, sharing that Göransson “suggested getting Travis Scott involved.” He shared that they invited Scott to the screening of Tenet and was one of the first people to ever see the movie.

Shortly after the release of the movie, Scott shared a note that Nolan had written him. In the note, Nolan praised Scott’s work on the music video of Franchise.

It appears that Nolan had his own reasons to invite Scott to act in his upcoming movie. Some fans continue to defend the singer, sharing that he should be given a chance to prove his acting abilities in the Nolan movie.
