With the release of the highly anticipated Wonder Man miniseries on Disney+, the show’s finale has left many people possibly confused and definitely wanting more. And while we may not have concrete news about the character’s potential return in Doomsday, we can talk about the ending of Season 1.
As we see in the last couple of scenes, after exposing Hollywood as nothing more than a mind-control apparatus disguised as entertainment, Trevor Slattery is captured and contained by the Department of Damage Control. And with Simon Williams finally becoming the star he was destined to be, he holds off on playing yet another role as Hollywood’s next big thing.
Thus, here’s a deeper dive into Wonder Man’s ending, where we explain the reason for Simon (Yahya Abdul Mateen-II) saving Trevor (Ben Kingsley) from the DDC containment facility.
Wonder Man Ending Explained: Simon Chooses What Kind of Hero He Is
Before the season concludes, we can see Simon in the final episode, titled ‘Yucca Valley’, walking down a hallway and eventually reaching the cell Trevor is in. After giving Simon a chance at redemption for his hate and resentment, and a chance to prove himself through his sacrifice, Trevor asks Simon how his movie went.
Looking back at his life until that point, Simon claims it would’ve been better if Trevor had played his role as Barnaby in it. Soon, we see Simon use his ionic powers to free Trevor from his containment and, surrounded by a large squad of DDC agents, take to the sky along with his friend.
As the scene fades to black, we realize that while the ending may have lacked the typical grand MCU closure, it was on purpose.
After all the anger of being overlooked, his need to matter, and his chance to prove himself as the star he knew he could become, Simon realized that the kind of superhero that Hollywood wanted him to be was not authentic. Despite possessing exceptional powers, all the role of Wonder Man in the film gave him was empty fame and recognition.
Thus, to truly become the superhero he wanted to be, he needed to listen to himself instead of Hollywood executives. And the first step towards achieving that was to confront a misguided soul, who was Trevor. Despite cheating him and plotting against him, Simon realised that Trevor wanted to change and redeem himself, something that resonated with him deep down.
In the end, Wonder Man proved that behind all the glorified stories, the fame, and superficiality, a superhero has to rise above everything to truly personify the idea of heroism, no matter how hard it is. It shows you that the tough actions performed when no one’s looking matter more.
Wonder Man Can Fit Perfectly in the MCU Post-Secret Wars
As stated earlier, while no confirmation regarding the future of Wonder Man in the MCU is set in stone yet, there’s a lot of potential Marvel Studios has if they decide to make him a staple character of the franchise.
In many of the comics featuring the superhero, he has mixed it up with other notable characters from the Marvel Universe, such as Beast from X-Men, the Fantastic Four, and even Marvel’s street-level superheroes like Daredevil. And with the MCU heading toward a reset of the franchise, these characters and teams will become center stage post-Secret Wars.
Thus, with the X-Men reportedly becoming the main focus of the MCU in the future, Wonder Man’s connection with the Mutant team can see him becoming an integral part of the franchise in the future. Otherwise, the team of West-Coast Avengers, featuring characters like Moon Knight, Spider-Woman, Tigra, Mockingbird, and others, can be his home in Phase 7.
