PlayStation Is Reportedly Reviving Its Rewards Program to Compete with Xbox

PlayStation may be working on a new rewards system as Xbox continues to expand its popular Microsoft Rewards ecosystem. Last year, it was confirmed that Sony’s previous reward system, PlayStation Stars, would be shut down, and it seems like a new program based on wallet credits might be in the works.

New Rewards Program?

While Sony hasn’t made anything official yet, the timing and details hint at something more than just a coincidence. This could be its best attempt yet to close the gap with Xbox’s rewards ecosystem.

Reddit user u/streetxrat94 shared their findings on the r/PlayStation subreddit, saying that they noticed an unusual PlayStation Store page labeled “Wallet Credits.” If you look at the page, it’s complete with official PlayStation branding and the ability to add it to a wishlist.

The page is marked as “announced,” with a release date listed as “to be determined,” and appears across multiple regions, including the US, UK, and parts of Europe. The interesting thing about it is that we can already add funds to our PlayStation wallets through existing payment options, so making a separate store entry seems unnecessary unless it’s for a different purpose.

Sony already has a history with rewards, and this looks like the next step. In the original Reddit post, fans discussed the rewards of the early-to-mid PS4 era, when earning trophies, particularly Platinum trophies, could be redeemed for PlayStation Network vouchers. There was also the Sony Rewards program, which let us use points for wallet funds before it was discontinued.

At the same time, a lot of fans also mentioned that they’re getting notifications about their PlayStation Stars status expiring around the same time this store page was found. While Sony hasn’t made any official announcement, there’s definitely something coming.

This Could Be Sony’s Answer to Xbox Rewards

Sony confirmed back in May 2025 that PlayStation Stars, which was its previous reward program, would be phased out as the company evaluated new ideas. The Stars system included digital collectibles, challenges, and points redeemable for games or wallet funds. But ultimately, it never reached the same level as Xbox’s rewards system.

In comparison, Xbox Rewards has become a big part of Microsoft’s ecosystem. Players earn points simply by playing games, completing quests, shopping on the Xbox store, or subscribing to Game Pass. Those points can then be redeemed directly for Xbox gift cards, discounts, or even spent at checkout.

If Sony’s new wallet credit system is real, it could be a new strategy that could compete with this. We don’t know if it’ll be cashback-style rewards, trophy-based rewards, or challenges similar to Xbox quests. But Sony already knows what made PlayStation Stars and Xbox Rewards successful in the first place. So surely it works out.
