Not every reader likes to dive deep into interconnected lore and universes. While Brandon Sanderson offers this with most of his best-selling novels, fans can still explore his bibliography by checking out some of his standalone works and series outside of the Cosmere realm.
We get it—the Cosmere saga is a commitment, and you’d need to have time, effort, and patience to get into it. Thankfully, Sanderson also offers wonderful storytelling in bite-sized pieces with some of his published novellas. He also has other book series that are much easier to digest than Mistborn or The Stormlight Archive.
1. Legion Series (2012)
Also called the Stephen Leeds series, Sanderson’s Legion is a collection of science fiction novellas in four installments. It follows Stephen Leeds, a brilliant man who can generate multiple personae due to his special mental condition. He’s good at almost everything, but no one can truly understand his abilities since he doesn’t want people to come close to him.
If you love stories that blend psychological science fiction with mystery, including exploration of human identity and mental health, make sure to check this out at your nearest bookstore.
2. The Rithmatist Series (2013)
If you crave a series that’s not too long, Sanderson’s Rithmatist will do the trick. The setting is similar to our own, but with the presence of a complex geared machinery called springwork. A traditional ceremony is held for children who reach the age of 8 to determine the fates of those who will become a Rithmatist.
These warriors bring chalk drawings to life through precise geometric ritual, creating various offensive and defensive effects. What’s great about this is you can read the first book now before the sequel, The Aztlanian, arrives soon.
3. The Reckoners Series (2013)
If you lean more on stories with superheroes set in a post-apocalyptic world, try The Reckoners series. This one is a bit longer, with four novels and one short story, although not as complicated as the Cosmere universe.
Still, this will bring you into an epic rollercoaster ride at every turn of the page. It’s a unique take on the genre because, after a powerful force spread across Earth and the radiation gave humans super abilities, these transformed individuals, called Epics, abused their powers and resorted to crime.
4. Snapshot (2017)
If you’re into sci-fi crime mysteries, Sanderson’s Snapshot would be a great choice. This novella is set in a world where law enforcement can generate a temporary yet immersive reconstruction of the past to aid in crime investigations.
Detectives can enter the snapshot, where everyone inside is merely a recording from that particular period. The novella explores themes such as ethics in technology, morality, and the sense of reality.
5. Skyward Series (2018)

Finally, another non-Cosmere book you can sink your teeth into is the Skyward series. It follows Spensa, a young woman living on a distant planet that is under constant attack from mysterious aliens.
As the daughter of a man who abandoned his flight during a battle, she must prove herself and secure a position in the flight academy. If your taste leans more toward space combat, coming-of-age stories, and galactic mystery, then this might be for you!
