Cape Fear Episode 7, titled Mongrel, destroys all the theories we had about the mysterious woman who was stalking Max. We already realized she was not Nevaeh’s mother earlier in the Apple TV show. But she did seem to have a past connection with Max. We were led to believe she had been one of his lovers. But no, she is his half-sister, Crystal Cady, and is played by Juliette Lewis, who also played the role of Daniella Bowden in Cape Fear (1991), one of Martin Scorsese’s best movies.
We are also told that she was institutionalized during Cady’s trial, something Anna lets slip. Also, she is no ally to Max, although Max’s revenge mission against what was done to him now looks like something else. Meanwhile, immediately following the fallout in Cape Fear Episode 6, Max shows his true face, literally, to the Bowdens as he flashes an evil grin to Anna Bowden (Amy Adams), in particular. Now, Natalie, too, has fallen prey to his charm, magnetism, and lies. Let’s unpack it all.

The Cady Family Secret That Changes the Story

We have known for quite some time that Max had a difficult childhood. He was kept in a cage by his father like a dog, for instance. In Mongrel, we meet his father, played by Ron Perlman. It was surprising how even now, after what he has been through and how hardened he has become after his imprisonment, he is frightened of his father. Max arrives at his childhood home in North Carolina with Natalie (Lily Collias), and that is a whole other story that’s explored later.
Max accumulates his fleeing courage and asks his father where Crystal is, and that’s how we know that she is his sister. So, that routine and the song “Jingle of a Dog Collar“ that made Max briefly go insane towards the end of Cape Fear Episode 3 were not some kink thing, but a sister bullying her brother?
Cape Fear earlier made us wonder whether Max really killed his wife. This episode proves that he may or may not have killed her specifically, but he is guilty of countless other murders (Faith Valentine in Episode 5, for instance). In Mongrel, he kills Ray Rawlins (Jamie Hector, also known for playing Marlo Stanfield in The Wire, perhaps the best HBO show of all time).
Ray, a reformed convict and a private investigator, was sent by Anna to look into Max’s personal life and anything that could save the Bowdens from his obsessive crusade. After leaving his home, Max goes to his sister’s humble dwelling, a houseboat at the bank of the Cape Fear River. But Ray gets there first. Finding the dwelling abandoned, he breaks into it and finds polaroid pictures of Max clicked, presumably, by Crystal. He calls Anna to tell her that the woman who was pursuing Max was Crystal, his sister, but can explain no further due to dodgy reception.
Meanwhile, Max arrives with an unconscious Natalie. Ray and he have a brief conversation about what each of them is doing there. Ray urges Max to let go of his rage and resentment over what happened to him. But when Ray looks into the car and spots Natalie, Max shoots him thrice using the Bowdens’ pistol. “Let go,” Max whispers as Ray bleeds out. The guy has a pitch-dark sense of humor. Even when the show around him is not up to the mark, Max Cady is always compelling to watch, as FandomWire’s M.N. Miller noted in our 5/10 review of Cape Fear.
Did Max Cady Brainwash Zack and Natalie?

Now, we have at least some inkling as to why Zack (Joe Anders) has been behaving the way he does. He was injected, among other things, by Max with Scopolamine, and probably repeatedly. Usually given for motion sickness, in large amounts, it can make imbibers unusually suggestible and impressionable. This is what Zack’s doctor tells them. Depending on the quantity of the drug, it could make Zack’s psychosis permanent.
The vials of the same medicine are found by Tom (Patrick Wilson) in Nevaeh’s (Malia Pyles) hiding place in their house. They decide to plant the drugs in Max’s home as they must have Nevaeh’s prints. They recruit Anna’s estranged father to do so.
So, this is what happened to Zack. He really was brainwashed, perhaps from when he was kidnapped. At the end of Cape Fear Episode 6, we saw Zack walking across the street to Max’s house even as Tom was restraining Nevaeh, who was discovered hiding in their house.
But it is not just Zack who is under Max’s influence now. Natalie, in the first two episodes of Cape Fear, was the level-headed sibling. But by the end of the episode, she believes Max is her father (it may or may not be true).
She was the daughter of Anna from her first marriage, or so she was told. After the brouhaha at the Bowdens, Anna sent her to stay with Paul, her ex-husband, so she would be safe. When Natalie asked Paul whether she was really his daughter or Tom’s, his response was noncommittal, which was an answer in itself. Natalie returns to her home, claiming Anna called her. And sure enough, Max knocks. He is pretending to return the Bowdens’ cat. He had earlier planted the seeds of doubt in Natalie regarding her origin.
Initially apprehensive, Max quickly charms her because that’s what he does. He makes her feel sorry for what Tom did to Max (he beat him after finding Zack at his home). He tells her that he did not make Nevaeh do anything. We have known Nevaeh has been messing up with Cape Fear Episode 4. She had daddy issues, he says, and shows her their texts as evidence. Nevaeh, says Max, wanted to take revenge on the Bowdens on Max’s behalf. Natalie believes him. How could she not? Max can be incredibly charming when he wants to, and this is why he has so many women lying for him. He even convinced Tom that he was his friend. That duality (equal parts seducer and sociopath) is precisely what makes Javier Bardem’s Max Cady the definitive screen incarnation of Max Cady.
When Natalie learns that Max is going on a road trip (to his childhood home), she says she wants to tag along. Max denies, but he knows she will follow. And we see him injecting an apple with a drug (perhaps Scopolamine). When Ray and Max confront each other, Natalie is not conscious because of the drugged apple that she ate. Before going on the road trip to North Carolina, she had taken one of her family’s firearms, and this is what Max uses to kill Ray.
Is Natalie Really Max Cady’s Daughter?

We have been asking the same question for quite some time, from early last month, in fact (the show premiered with two episodes on June 5, 2026). Only, earlier it was about Zack. We know from this episode that Zack was only deluded. But Natalie now believes she is Anna’s daughter with Max. The timelines seem to match. Natalie was born roughly nine months after his alleged affair with Anna. Or so Max leads her to believe. He had earlier told her that he had a baptism in the murky Cape Fear River. He could not and cannot swim. But after the act, he was a changed man.
After he tells her about Natalie’s origin, she walks into the river herself. Max arrives, lifts her over the water, and then dunks her head himself. This is a baptism of sorts for her, too. What are the implications? Well, regardless of whether she is his daughter or not, Natalie buys Max’s lie, and just like Zack, she falls under his thrall.
Once back home, she claims she could not sleep at Paul’s place and goes to her room. Meanwhile, Tom and Anna choose to put evidence into Max’s house, making themselves believe that beating Max now would require being a little like him. There is much irony in that, which fits perfectly in this bleak view of the world portrayed in the series. Max Cady doesn’t need to destroy the Bowdens himself anymore, and Max Cady is not simply a force of destruction like, say, Anton Chigurh, one of many compelling villains played by Bardem before this one, was. He uses the effect he has on people to his advantage.
