Cape Fear Episode 9 continues to make the mythology around Max Cady (Javier Bardem) and now his family more and more complex. The penultimate episode, titled The Scar appropriately, reveals another gnarly detail about Max, which is that he most likely has a son with his sister, Crystal Cady (Juliette Lewis). And that son is Luke, the caretaker of the Cadys’ dogs who Natalie was creeped out by in Cape Fear’s Episode 7. I use “likely” here because this miniseries has repeatedly turned seemingly obvious truths into deliberate misdirections.
The episode also ends on a sort of cliffhanger as Anna (Amy Adams) flees after jumping into the Cape Fear river from the bickering Cadys just as Max arrives at the scene. She also has a stab wound in one of her hands thanks to Crystal. Bleeding and afraid, she is immediately away from harm, but Cady will almost certainly pursue her once he has things under control. But her husband Tom (Patrick Wilson) may not be so lucky. As he does with so many people, Max just might have talked him into killing himself.
This show is a mixed bag (FandomWire M.N. Miller gave it 5 out of 10 in his Cape Fear review), but it is also compulsive viewing, if it makes sense.

The Secret Crystal Has Been Hiding for Years
Like with almost any episode since the show premiered on June 5, Cape Fear Episode 9 is also packed with twists. But the biggest twist is the parentage of Luke. When we first met him, he appeared to be a hired hand to care for the Cadys’ dogs. But no, he is Crystal’s son. Not only that, he is Crystal’s son with Max. Anna makes her way to Crystal after asking for her in the town. The weapon she brought with her is taken away by Crystal.
Anna then makes Crystal take her to the trailer of Max’s mistress, Amy Brancato (Kathleen Scott Paul), who killed herself in Cape Fear Episode 1 on Max’s instructions. Crystal doesn’t want Anna to go inside, saying it is a crime scene, which makes Anna check it out all the more. She finds pictures of a toddler with a long scar running down the side of his torso in the lap of a woman.
When Anna restrains Crystal and forces her to go into the hold, Crystal is rescued by Robert Cady (Ron Perlman) and Luke Cady (Mat Mattern), who take Anna’s firearm away from her. Later, Anna notices the scar on a shirtless Luke and realizes what’s what. She knows from the text Max sent to Crystal on her phone that he is coming too. She sees her chance and tells Luke that he is the product of an incestuous union between his mother and her uncle. The young man is outraged but believes her, and we get the idea that he has long been tired of his mother’s lies.
As he hyperventilates and screams at his mother and physically attacks his grandfather, Crystal stabs Anna. Anna tries to fend off with her hands, and Crystal’s knife slips through one of her hands like butter. And then, Max’s car arrives, and Anna jumps into the water while everyone else is busy arguing.
Has Tom Hanged Himself?
We do not see it happen, so we don’t know, and we won’t know until the finale. But I think he won’t; otherwise, Cape Fear would have shown it. Tom earlier received a visitor and was perturbed to see it was Max. When Tom asked him what he wanted, Max said he had a means to his salvation for him. In his cell, Tom will get a gift from Max. When Tom gets into his cell, he finds out that the “gift” is a noose made out of a bed linen.
We know Tom’s brother hanged himself when he was a young boy, and that image of his brother hanging from the ceiling has haunted him ever since. Max is so good at exploiting the psychological weaknesses and past traumas of his victims. This is why Bardem’s version of Max Cady is the best one yet. He is simply too compelling to not root for, if only a little bit. Tom also finds a phone ringing on his prison bed and picks it up. Of course, it is Max. He says he has both his children under control — Natalie (Lily Collias) is in prison at the mercy of Nevaeh Valentine (Malia Pyles), and Zack (Joe Anders) is at a psychiatric facility (he seems to have intimate knowledge of the room he is housed in).
Tom is torn and at first defies Max’s deal. But when he calls Zack at the facility, he is told that Zack is missing. Has he fled or been been taken? If it is the former, did he go willingly? Panicked, Tom calls everyone he knows, including Noa, to help find Zack as he cannot do much from prison. But when we last see him, he looks without hope at his noose.
Will he do it?
Natalie Beats Nevaeh at Her Own Game
Natalie, when we first saw her in Cape Fear, was practically brimming with naivete. She was also an ideal child to her parents in Cape Fear. Unlike Zack, she never rebelled. But by now, thanks mainly to the machinations of Nevaeh, she has become something of a Machiavelli herself. Okay, I overstate. But in The Scar, she seduced Nevaeh, and their pillow talk involved how the latter is under the thrall of her father, Max. She also let it slip that Max now wants Nevaeh to kill Natalie. He gave the order through a phone he smuggled into the prison for her. Nevaeh makes it clear that although she will not kill Natalie, she also won’t turn on her father.
Later, when Nevaeh wakes up, she finds her phone missing and gets to the prison gate just in time to see Natalie leaving. She has been bailed out by Noa. Nevaeh tries everything; she pleads, calls her names, but Natalie barely glances back. This time, Natalie employed subtlety and craftiness instead of taking things head-on like in Cape Fear Episode 8.
Cape Fear Episode 9 puts most of the major characters on a fork in the road, as it were, as the season ends. Anna has been injured, but she is now armed with the knowledge necessary to unravel all of the deceit that Max has been cultivating around his family for years. Luke has been put through hell to realize the reality that everything in his life might be a lie, whereas Nevaeh has gone against the direct order of Max (killing Natalie). The only major question is regarding Tom, who is either going to submit to Max’s mental manipulation or fight back and free himself. For the first time all season, Max doesn’t seem completely in control, and that may prove to be his biggest vulnerability. He is used to being in control and is a little like another of Bardem’s villains, Anton Chigurh, in that sense.
Even if Max has not committed the crime for which he was sent to prison, he is a bad, bad man. He kills casually and without remorse. He also forces others to do his crimes for him and then lets them bear the consequences. But the Bowdens also cannot go scot-free, for they are not innocent either. Some might argue, though, that they have suffered enough already.
