What Is The Westies About? Plot and Cast Guide
The Westies takes place during the construction of the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center, a project offering a large new source of money to anyone capable of controlling labor, contracts, and neighborhood influence. Eamon Sweeney leads the Irish-American Westies gang, whose reputation for violence has earned it a place beside criminal organizations with far greater numbers. Sweeney chooses cooperation with Paul Castellano and John Gotti, hoping the arrangement will protect his group’s position and secure its share of the construction profits.
Jimmy Roarke has different ideas. He respects Sweeney, yet he represents a younger faction that has little patience for old bargains or inherited limitations. His ambition creates friction inside the gang, especially when his friendship with the volatile Mickey Flanagan begins causing fresh trouble. I wasn’t expecting Brittney, best known to many viewers for Grantchester, to fit this setting so comfortably, but his controlled manner gives Roarke an unsettling quality. Keenan complicates matters from the other side of the law. He is an NYPD officer with personal ties to the neighborhood, and Polk recruits him into an FBI operation targeting organized crime. That assignment leaves him caught between federal demands, old loyalties, police corruption, and his estranged son Danny, who has begun working for the Westies. Welliver has spent years playing men who carry irritation like a second job, so this role suits him almost suspiciously well.
The series also follows Bridget Walsh, who becomes involved in a dangerous IRA operation through Brendan Cahill.
