Peter Cullen spent decades teaching generations of Transformers fans that strength and gentleness could occupy the same spark. Following Cullen’s death at 85 on August 26, 2026, one Optimus Prime farewell from 13 years ago now carries an almost unbearably fitting resonance. Cullen died peacefully at his Los Angeles home surrounded by family, according to his representative and family statement (via AP News.com). In 2013’s Transformers Prime Beast Hunters: Predacons Rising, Optimus sacrifices himself by returning the AllSpark to Cybertron’s core. His final narration includes a line that hits considerably harder now (IMDb):
Above all, do not lament my absence, for in my spark, I know that this is not the end, but merely a new beginning. Simply put, another transformation.
Thirteen years later, it is difficult to imagine a more poignant accidental epitaph for the man who gave Optimus his soul. Cullen may be gone, but the character, performances, and generations he influenced continue. In Optimus’ own language, this feels less like an ending than one final transformation.
Predacons Rising Gives Optimus a Worthy Goodbye
Predacons Rising arrived in 2013 as the feature-length epilogue to Transformers: Prime. After Cybertron’s restoration, Unicron possesses Megatron’s body and targets the reborn planet, forcing Autobots, Decepticons, and Predacons into an unlikely alliance. Optimus eventually absorbs the AllSpark and realizes it can no longer be separated from his own spark. Returning it to Cybertron means sacrificing himself so that new Cybertronian life can exist. Instead of raging against his fate, he entrusts the future to his comrades and disappears into the Well of AllSparks.
The sacrifice would not remain permanent in franchise continuity, as Optimus later returned in Transformers: Robots in Disguise. Still, Predacons Rising was designed as the emotional epilogue to Transformers: Prime, and its farewell remains one of Cullen’s most affecting moments in the role. The movie still carries a 7.5/10 IMDb rating, while Rotten Tomatoes records an 86% audience score from 250-plus ratings. Cullen’s relationship with Optimus was intensely personal. His older brother Larry, a Marine veteran, inspired the character’s measured authority.
Cullen recalled (via The Guardian) Larry advising him against playing a swaggering Hollywood hero, telling him to be “strong enough to be gentle.” That philosophy is written all over the Predacons Rising farewell. Optimus saves his world and asks for no monument in return.
Optimus Was Only One Side of Peter Cullen’s Remarkable Voice
Peter Cullen’s résumé could make your head spin. Beyond Optimus, he voiced the eternally gloomy Eeyore across numerous Winnie the Pooh productions, played the villainous KARR on Knight Rider, supplied vocalizations for King Kong in the 1976 film, and helped create the Predator’s unnerving sounds in the 1987 Arnold Schwarzenegger classic. Cullen called Eeyore his favorite character outside Optimus (via EW). Yet Optimus remained the role sewn closest to his heart. Cullen first played the Autobot leader on the 1984 animated series before returning for The Transformers: The Movie, television projects, video games, and Michael Bay’s live-action franchise. His final movie appearance as Prime came in Transformers: Rise of the Beasts in 2023.
The affection ran both ways. Transformers One director Josh Cooley said in 2024 (via EW), “Peter Cullen is Optimus Prime and is Transformers,” while discussing the intimidating task of casting Chris Hemsworth as a younger version of the character. Cullen’s family has now asked fans to honor him through “compassion, integrity, and loyalty” and to remember the maxim that shaped Optimus: “be strong enough to be gentle” (via AP News).
