Hollywood’s obsession with corporate origin stories is heading straight to Clearwater Beach. An official feature film titled Hooters: The Movie is in development, bringing the wild, improbable rise of the world-famous wing-and-sports-bar chain to the big screen. Independently produced by the restaurant’s original founders, the upcoming biographical comedy will chronicle how an accidental business venture transformed into a multi-billion-dollar empire (via Deadline).
Directed by Emmy-nominated filmmaker Jon Rosenbaum (Woody Woodpecker Goes to Camp), the project promises a nostalgic, humorous dive into 1980s Americana, tracking the eccentric brains behind the brand and the monumental legal and cultural battles that followed.

Rather than a dry corporate documentary, the biopic is framed as a vibrant buddy comedy rooted in true events. The narrative centers on Ted and Lenny, two lifelong friends from a small Iowa town who stumble into creating a national phenomenon. Ted spots an alluring woman named Diane in a televised spring break commercial and convinces a skeptical Lenny to embark on a road trip to Clearwater Beach, Florida, to find her.
Diane eventually becomes the very first official “Hooters Girl,” sparking the aesthetic and service model that defined the brand. Cast, Creative Team, and What to Expect From the Hooters‘ Biopic
Behind the scenes, the biopic is coming directly from the people who lived it. Co-founder Ed Droste penned the script alongside Phil Olson and Chuck Melcher, and also served as a producer. Droste emphasized that while the founders were “just some guys who didn’t know what we were doing,” the heart of the story lies in the legendary waitstaff who drove its success.
He further added:
There’s a lot of drama, but a lot of heart and fun too. And of course, our world-famous Hooters Girls are the real stars. For over 40 years Hooters has been America’s oasis in good times and bad. It’s time to deliver a taste of our big hearted culture and famous humor to the world.
Casting is officially underway under the guidance of veteran casting directors Lisa London and Catherine Stroud (London/Stroud Casting). While the key roles for Ted, Lenny, and Diane have yet to be announced, production is eyeing a November start date. Filming will take place on location across Tampa and Clearwater, Florida, returning directly to where the original restaurant opened its doors in 1983.
